Can the full-time head of a guard unit have a full-time job guarding icecream?

No. He will retire and take on the new job. He was a DEA agent until he was put in the commanders position and he retired from DEA. He will be drawing 2 retirement checks and his new SGT at Arms check. He is just another liberal hack probably or she would not have selected him. Just my guess.

That is not 34 years AD time which means his military retirement will be dramatically less. However you forgot to factor in his GS retirement. My guess is political climber like that retired at least at the GS 14/15 range if not SES level. As a career "civil servant" his income is quite generous.
