Up-gunned 5-Ton Convoy Escorts (RVN)

This article might bring back a few memories to some who hang out in here. Before there were Toyota pickups being modified and MRAPs, there were these 5-ton convoy escorts being locally modified by the TransComs for running the QLs in RVN.

I guess I was to far into the jungle. The closes we came was a M274 MULE with a mini-gun.. That broke all the time from vibrations..

Not that I see a hole lot of safety in those APC's on the 5T's..

My first PSG was a Vietnam vet who worked a Quad .50 for a while. Had a LARGE break in service before coming back in and doing Golden Pheasant with the 82nd, then desert storm. Was an E6 then got promoted to E7 shortly after taking over as PSG. SFC Sizemore. When we weren't being "serious" and just rucking for PT with no audience, he would pull out a a boom box and strap it to his ruck.. and down the road we would go listening to CCR and other assorted greats. Good man.
