Western Hunt 2011 - Antelope

Rifle Antelope Hunt

After hunting elk and deer in Utah with the bow, I journeyed to Wyoming for antelope hunting.

I was interested in trying to kill an antelope at 1000 yards with a 308 so I spent a couple of days trying that and concluded that it was not a very simple thing to accomplish because the trajectory is so curved at that distance that any error in rangefinding or animal movement leads to a miss. So after a couple of shots at 1K I gave it up and settled for a more reasonable distance.

After messing around with the 308, It was time to settle down for some serious distances so I dug out the 34 inch barreled 7mm/338L imp. AKA 7mm Allen magnum. As things worked out I shot a doe at 954 yards and it still needed a finishing shot.

I made a shot at 560 yards on a coyote but only broke one front leg and never managed to hit it again. I was upset as I don’t intentionally do that to an animal.

I saved my buck tag until the end and then the wind got to be so bad that long range shooting was out of the question. I then went to the traditional glass and stalk method and shot the best buck left in the valley at 451 yards. I had been seeing this buck for a couple of weeks and had not thought him to be very good set of horns although he was obviously a very strong and aggressive buck who always managed to keep his does when challenged by other bucks.

All in all, not a great year for making spectacular shots on antelope for me.
