Leon Hale has had a Chronicle column for years. Love them. My father never talked about his childhood, filled with even more poverty than most at the time. Leon Hale gives me an idea what it was like.

"The Horse, the Wheel, and Language" by David W. Anthony. It's a discussion of Proto Indo-European, the source language that gave rise to the languages spoken in a band from Iceland, through Europe and Persia, to India. He goes into detail about when it was spoken, the location of the original homeland, and when the various language families branched off. Fascinating stuff.

"... astonishingly low rate of casualties." Well . . . over the first 77 days there were an average of 6,674 a day for the 77 days of the Normandy Campaign. (Pg 6)

My Dad gave me this book while informing me that he read it when he was in his 20's, and that it was and still is his favorite novel.
Does any child of a brilliant man need any further convincing?
Jaunting seems the perfect Sci-Fi twist, and will probobly be invented by SF Men in the future IMHO. 
Incrredible read, and since my mom just passed this year, am thankful my Dad shared this with me, as I want to hold his memories dear, always.

Just finished
Fighting Today's Wars by David G.Bolgiano and James M. Patterson. (see also here)
I don't expect to see this on the Chief of Staff's recommended list anytime soon (unless there's a serious regime change).
Thankfully the authors are not looking for that kind of official "endorsement" and God bless them for that as well. This appears to be one of those books that are written simply because they must.
But if you are a leader, know someone who is, or simply want to carry a very important message about a threat to our country and the hemorrhaging of our military services & what's expected of them - along with recommended steps to get it right - you need to read this book.
