Dolly alterd THE SONG...
Barry Stadler wrote the much loved and iconic "Ballad of the Green Berets"
AND a lot of people have been tooting Dolly's rendition of the song, BUT she butchered it.. She altered the words.
These are not the words Barry wrote:
"Delta Force and CIA, Marines and SOCOM clear the way, Covert missions now in play, Special OPS like the Green Beret"
I called her out on this years ago, but never received a reply..
It really anoyies me..
Anyone else agree??
Quote:
Ballad Of The Green Berets
As Written & Performed by SSgt Barry Sadler
Special Forces Paratrooper
Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say
The brave men of the Green Beret
Silver wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men we'll test today
But only three win the Green Beret
Trained to live, off nature's land
Trained in combat, hand to hand
Men who fight by night and day
Courage deep, from the Green Beret
Silver wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men we'll test today
But only three win the Green Beret
Back at home a young wife waits
Her Green Beret has met his fate
He has died for those oppressed
Leaving her this last request
Put silver wings on my son's chest
Make him one of America's best
He'll be a man they'll test one day
Have him win the Green Beret

I have heard better satirical versions in Team Rooms. Time she turned her focus solely on charity I think

Hey, hey, hey--easy partner. Can't let SF get all the glory while these other organizations go unrecognized. Time those spotlight-seeking Green Berets share some of all that public glory with the REAL heroes."

Isn't her version almost as old as SSG. Sadler's? Either way, I've always preferred SSG. Sadler's. Anyone else notice how the Sergeant is often professional addressed as "SSGT", instead of "SSG". Just a peeve of mine that I notice when I hunt for his videos on Youtube.
As tribute to him, and those here who love his music, not to mention the legend surrounding the man, here's two of his other tracks I just love!
"One Son of a Gun" SSG. Sadler's ballad singing about his love of his AR-15. Just don't let the yokels guarding recruiting centers hear it!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PX6R...nClVaW&index=1
"Garet Trooper" SSG. Sadler's tribute to the Fobbits of the Vietnam Era

You do know that Moses didn't come up with the abbreviations for military rank don't you? On this site are many dating back to, at least, the Korean War. SSGT was used in my day. Also, SPC in my day was not limited to E-4s. And, since I was in when SSGT Sadler was, that would be the correct designation.
Any other complaints?
Pat

Moses? I am familiar with the ranks of SP4, Specialist 4; SP5, Specialist 5; SP6, Specialist 6, etc. I've heard a few NCO's speak of their wish that those pay grades were still in existence.
I certainly do not mean to step on anyone's toes Pat. I've always associated the abbreviation "SSGT" (SSgt) with a Marine Staff Sergeant, not an Army Staff Sergeant.

Looking at orders from 1964, the rank designations used were: SP4 E4, SP5 E5, SGT E5, SSG E5, SFC E7, MSG E8, SGM E9, 1ST LT, CAPT, MAJ.
