A popular *******r was convicted of a hate crime in Britain on Tuesday after teaching a pet dog to give a Nazi salute and posting the video online.

Mark Meechan, better known as Count Dankula, was found guilty under the Communications Act after posting a video showing his girlfriend’s dog reacting to phrases such as “Sieg Heil" and "Gas the Jews" with what appears to be a Nazi salute.

Sheriff Derek O'Carroll said Meechan’s video was “grossly offensive” and did not buy the man’s defense that it was merely a joke to annoy his girlfriend, the Herald Scotland reported.
The *******r’s case became widely known after he was arrested in 2016 when the video went viral.

“The Met seems to imply that a person can face two charges, one for the assault, and another for ‘their reasons for doing it.’ That is not true,” added criminal barrister Matthew Scott in an extensive blog post.

He explained that “although there are some cases where doing an act is illegal irrespective of your state of mind, there are no cases where your state of mind can make you guilty of an offence if you don’t actually do anything capable of amounting to a crime”.

Mr. Scott accused the Met of writing “gobbledegook” and argued that “a badly written website misleads the public and damages the reputation of the Metropolitan Police”.

Hard pass. I'm stationed in the UK right now and it's unreal. I remember highlighting a statistic about Islamism and it's relation to terrorist acts in the region and associated security issues from lack of border controls and basically was "reminded" that I couldn't say those kinds of things here.

A man who filmed a pet dog giving Nazi salutes before posting the footage online has been fined £800.
Mark Meechan, 30, recorded his partner’s pug responding to statements such as “gas the Jews” and “sieg heil” by raising its paw before posting the footage on ******* in April 2016.
He was found guilty of posting material that was “grossly offensive” and “antisemitic and racist in nature” in breach of the Communications Act, in an offence aggravated by religious prejudice, following a trial at Airdrie sheriff court.
Meechan had claimed he made the video as a joke to annoy his partner and raised issues about freedom of speech. Speaking outside the court, he said that the decision set a dangerous precedent.

Dozens of supporters of Meechan, including former English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson, were at the court for the hearing on Monday.
Sheriff Derek O’Carroll, sentencing Meechan, said the video was grossly offensive and that his girlfriend did not even subscribe to the channel he posted it on.
He said: “The centrepiece of your video consists of you repeating the phrase ‘gas the Jews’ over and over again as a command to a dog, which then reacts.
“You use the command ‘sieg heil’, having trained the dog to raise its paw in response and the video shows a clip of a Nuremberg rally and a flashing image of Hitler with strident music.
“You say the video was only intended as a joke to upset your girlfriend, whose dog you used, and nothing more.
“On the whole evidence, including your own, applying the law as made by parliament and interpreted by the most senior courts in this land, I found it proved that the video you posted, using a public communications network, was grossly offensive and contained menacing, antisemitic and racist material.”

Uh, no.

"Jewish" can refer both to a religion (which I'm presuming you are referring to as a "choice") and an ethnicity.

A person cannot chose their ethnicity.

A whole bunch of people were killed in the holocaust because of their jewish ethnicity, who were not practicing adherents of Judaism the religion.

But you are correct, most Europeans have less robust "freedom of speech" protections than we do as Americans. Is their system better? Worse? I can't say, but it works for them.
