If you have COMCAST xfinity wi-fi ...

I had Direct-TV for years and years, but when I moved into my new place several years ago, my landlady said I couldn't have it, because she didn't want a dish bolted on the side of the place (one on a free standing stand wouldn't have worked, due to the trees in the south exposure.. couldn't get a signal) so I had to go with Comcast.

Had on of their old routers and cable boxes, and things ran smoothly, and up till a couple of months ago, I was FORCED to switch routers and cable boxes to xfinity.

A couple of weeks ago I began having problems with both the router and cable box. Channels would freeze up or the box just wouldn't work, and I would loose internet service, even though it showed that I still had a connection. This would primarilary happen in the evening hours at or about 9pm to 10pm, and typically stay down through the night.

Looking at my wifi connection tab (located bottom right hand corner of my window [Windows - 7]) I started noticing an xfinity wifi hot spot. The signal strength was marked "excellent", just as my regular wifi code was marked, but it also shows all my neighbors sites as well, or which, all are secure. But I also saw a couple of other wifi hotspot icons in the menu as well. Signal strength was poor or not there, but they were popping up fairly regularly.

It was driving me NVTS !!!!
Constantly losing my internet signal at night, while I was trying to do homework. Called COMCAST many times and always got the same old story ... "We're sorry Sir, but we have been having a few glitch's in the system as of late. Hopefully it should clear itself up soon."

Then I saw this article last night .....

Quote:
Comcast Was Sued For Quietly Turning Customers' Home WiFi Into "Public" Hotspots

Your home Comcast Wi-Fi router is likely also part of a giant "public" hotspot network. Here's how to turn that off.

Two San Francisco residents are now suing Comcast for suffering from, among other things, "decreased, inadequate speeds on their home Wi-Fi network." Though plausible, the suit wasn't over any of the problems that people tend to bring up around Comcast, but because the cable company has been, with little notice, been using its customers' home Wi-Fi routers to extend its pay-as-you-go "public" Internet service.

Toyer Grear and Joycelyn Harris claim in a class-action lawsuit filed last week in California, that Comcast is violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act by exploiting customers for profit, using their electricity to help power the company's giant network—it can often be seen listed as "xfinitywifi" or "CableWiFi"—and never asking for permission in the process.

The little-publicized program rests on the modem/router boxes that Comcast rents to its customers. These gateways house two separate antennas, one of which the customer can use while the other is reserved for the "Xfinity Wi-Fi" signal, an option that pops up increasingly often on lists of nearby Wi-Fi networks.

Rest of the story here ----> http://www.fastcompany.com/3039682/c...haring-economy
If you have COMCAST xfinity wifi and one of their routers, you may want to check into this.

Now that I have this information, I can come at them from a different approach.

I have my own router and Apple Wifi transmitter. Both have been locked with their own respective, ridiculously long, access codes that I generated. Yeah, I know there are some really smart folks out there with the right kind of kit who can spoof them into granting them access if they really wanted to. But I think many of my neighbors' systems are probably easier to hijack.

Run a similar setup with the ACLs... and with other low-hanging fruit in the area.
