The real reason for this change of policy is discrimination. By only allowing women to participate, it is an offense to the LBGT community.

so - what is JAG going to do when a young gal rushes in to give a lipstick stain to Joe and while following published guidelines, Joe hip checks her, then puts the boots to her...
...self defense from her physical assault and all that jazz

When I was a young 2LT, my platoon sergeant once told me, "Sir, it is never a good idea to put forth guidance you can't reasonably enforce. If you do this, the guidance will be consistently breached and - in the eyes of the men - you'll lose the power of your command."

This was told to me in response to a directive by our battalion commander that soldiers were not allowed to curse during the course of a normal duty day.

Anyway, my platoon sergeant eventually made sergeant major. :-)

The battalion commander no doubt went on to be a military adviser for obama. That was some sage advice you got from your PSG. What year was this? No cursing?

That has been a rule of some Bn Commanders and CSMs since at least the 70's.

Every once in a great while one would show up and put the word out. The response was typically "He has got to be kidding."

Since neither was around troops much it didn't have much impact.

That's kind of funny, our Bn. Cdr. in 78 thought he was Patton. I will never forget the day he got the whole Bn. in the theatre and called us all Sons of Bitches. I always called cadence on our PT runs and some of it was pretty salty. I am sure that in today's coed Combat Engineer world that sort of language would not be tolerated.

maybe they are only allowed to have lipstick in uniform when they are marching in a pair of red hooker-heels

hard to keep up with all of the gender fluid rules of accepted social behavior

Year? 1996.

My platoon sergeant was among the top ten NCOs I've ever served in 20 years of service. And, that's saying something considering I served most of those years in SF. He was the youngest E-7 in the unit, the most physically fit soldier, and the most accomplished NCO in the unit (military training, eduction, etc.). I was very lucky to have that quality of mentorship during my first military assignment after being commissioned. "My job, sir" he would say, "is to grow you into a kick-ass company commander". I hope I did not disappoint him.

Apparently, some ladies either didn’t get the memo or simply blew off the army hand-wringers and did it anyway.

On top of that, VP Mike Pence showed up and marched in the parade. It was rather fun shouting down the LQB`JM#KI_V@ freaks across the street with “USA” as the VP stopped in front of us before continuing along the parade route.
