I am of the belief we should have moved hell and high water to get the young man back in American hands. If for no other reason than we did not know for certain what lead to his terrible choice that day. Additionally, the United States punishes American Soldiers, not the Taliban.

That said, I hope they slam him with the most stringent punishment possible. Coward. All you had to do was complete your tour, come home, and you can whine and complain on social media like a large portion of other vets that never left the firebase to find a reason to complain.

You risked American lives on patrols to come find you when you went missing. Men gave their lives for you. I hope there is some justice for their sacrifice.

I read enough stories from the lads in his unit, I think they would have killed him also.

I certainly understand the sentiment and don't besmirch others for that opinion.

My conclusion has been that the members of his former unit 'thinking' that he was a coward and traitor is not a conviction nor did they know for certain the events that led to his leaving that base. What if they were wrong? Did he leave a note saying he was starting a new life or did he not?

We know now (in all likelihood) they were correct, however I think it would have been a very dangerous precedent to set.

If there is even the slightest chance he was a legitimate POW than like I said, hell and high water. Sort it out when he is home.

Additionally, I prefer to see American citizens tried and convicted in the US, no matter their crimes.


That said... screw him. He's a coward and a traitor I hope he gets exactly what is coming to him.

The frustration with this issue is the fact that he has not been dealt with. At this rate he'll be drawing a retirement check before he is ever convicted. If he is going to openly serve then his ass out to be in some grunt unit. I am sure there is a shortage of E-5's somewhere and that they would love to have him, at least for a day or two.

That's a smart move on delaying this until after the general election and swearing-in of a new president. Assuming that we get a decent president (insert snarky comment here), we have a much better chance of a tough sentence sticking. I don't trust Obama one iota---he would pardon this guy in a heartbeat. If he's gone, much less chance of that happening.

This is not a hard case to prosecute. Hell, Bergdahl gave video confessions. The prosecutors are playing chess, not checkers. This might just end up happening the way it should.
