Some newer 911 cell phone call systems can receive the location of the cell tower being used.
That tower can be some distance from the phone, so accuracy is shotgunish at best.
Phone companies also record the last xxx cell towers a phone used, there by setting a general direction of travel.
All cellphones transmit info, to include brand/type. So,, a smart box could try to derive the distance from the cell tower by knowing the phones transmit power, but buildings and other natural terrain obstacles will cause distance errors.
