I am wrong in thinking the "beauty" in damascus is the fact that the layered iron & steel didn't weld correctly. Not enough flux and heat, leaving the vestige of the incomplete weld marks as the design??
I can remember the first time I was handed an old double barrel shotgun and looking at the twisted wire used to create the barrels. Looked great, very integrate design, but I always wondered if it was inherently weak and only used because the technology was not up to speed??
