As far as a "good" SF movie goes - let me know when they make one.

However, YMMV - and so it goes...

Richard

I would love to see it but who the hell would play Bull Simons?

I am a fan of Ridley Scott--saw Prometheus last night, was pretty good--but I've sensed some animosity toward Black Hawk Down on here. Opinions on Ridley Scott in general?

Becase it involves, "Them." Peroid. The Quiet Professionals.

The only good SF movies I ever saw were training films featuring the 9th SPGA! (And some of the short films on "The Big Picture"!)

Beer improves most everything...up to a point!

I wish they had served alcohol in movie theatres "back in the day" - I'd have liked a lot more movies if they had done that.

It could be about the bottom line. If you were in charge of a movie with a six figure production budget with a summer release date would you let an actor jeopardize your time table, ticket sales, merchandizing and product licensing fees so he could do his own stunts?

MOO, when a character is described in a film as "SF" or "SOF", it is mostly to signify that the character in question is hell on wheels and/or borderline when it comes to his sanity. This construct allows for the ongoing dehumanization--if not outright demonization--of warriors in certain quarters. To be clear, I don't think all of Hollywood participates in this dynamic and that sometimes the participation reflects other concerns (mostly the bottom line). I do think American civilization would be better off if studios, film makers, and audiences took a long hard look at it.

IIRC, Eastwood's character, Tom Highway in Heartbreak Ridge was supposed to be a Ranger. The army pulled its support after reviewing the script--the dialog was too blue.

Navarone: Brief backstory

Perusing latest issue of WWII History mag today, and a fine article by COL (Ret) John Mancini discussing the SOE/OSS efforts in Albania. While the article highlights the eventual pivotal role of a USMC GySgt commo guy, Nick "Cooky" Kukich, there is mention of British actor Sir Anthony Quayle who was an SOE officer at the time. Quayle over the years authored a couple of books and several screen plays along covert opns themes - while remaining reticent about his wartime role - and had stated that the original screenplay for Guns of Navarone was very similar to actual ops conducted in the Med by SOE and OSS teams. Those teams were a true thorn to the Germans who devoted increasingly larger maneuver-size forces, needed in Italy, dedicated to hunting them down.

The movie remains for HH6 & I easily watchable and shows the difficulties involved in partisans who already have their own political & tribal differences. You can't just go into a country, bow down and say, "now can't we all just play nice?"

We're in northwest "Easton" !
We've almost done what we can internally. We need some help against the agitators from the commie-filled area to the south. If we got a little help I think we could break free and join "Weston." Who will come to our aid?

Classic, thanks very much for posting.

Floridan? I feel like they could've come up with a better name. Maybe... Southen?

Given that films based on real events involving SOF contain a lot of factual errors and just general inaccuracies (Black Hawk Down comes to mind first), usually for dramatic effect, would a fictional story portraying SOF realistically or authentically be preferable?

I'll not quibble over the neutral zone even if they wanted to call it Elvistan. A names a name. What I found most interesting overall was how early the film was - look at the 'War Office' emblem at the end (vs. DoD or DA). And they were forward-thinking enough to be looking at what is basically a scenario where you have the Balkanization of a previously larger country (or region). My readings over many years tell me that was a mission right in the SF wheelhouse - and motto.

I wonder during the time of those "Big Picture" films, shown all over, how many regular Soldiers saw that one and felt the call.

(Yeah, I'm one of those who thinks Red Dawn would've been a much better movie if, after a short break, we came back and found that a split ODA had joined those kids like Powers Boothe had been talkin' about. )

Had Jennifer Grey sat on my lap in the Cinerama Dome and whispered promises of a night of frolic while I watched that clunker, Red Dawn would still have been among the worst films I saw that decade. (And we're talking about a list that includes Band of the Hand, Conan the Destroyer, and The Last Starfighter.
