WRAL website shares nifty search tool to locate CWP holders in NC

Not sure how I feel about this...Mixed emotions. However, if the database is correct, I know now that about 50% of the residences on my street have at least one CWP holder.....

http://www.wral.com/news/state/nccap...tory/11295888/

Quote:
Find concealed carry permit holders in your area
*When entering street names, do not include house numbers or extensions such as drive, avenue, street, etc. This database contains permits for the WRAL viewing area, including Chatham, Cumberland, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Halifax, Harnett, Hoke, Johnston, Lee, Moore, Orange, Nash, Northampton, Person, Sampson, Vance, Warren, Wayne, Wilson and Wake counties. You can search using one or more fields.
Edited to change title. Changed it for ya - I don't think NC gives a hoot about the CHP (CA Hwy Patrol). Richard

Sucks as now robbers can just look up neighborhoods and target them for weapons.

Unfortunately in my neighborhood I'm one of only a handful with a weapon much less a CCW and I grew up with my neighbors.

I've had mine since 91 and I'm just glad I've never had the occasion to pull it.

I wonder how they would feel if we put up a website that listed valuables such as jewelry? The media would be all over it.

I like the Texas response

11. Can others find out if I am licensed to carry a concealed handgun?

Generally, no. Information on individuals who are licensed to carry a concealed handgun is confidential and not subject to requests under the Public Information Act. However, the Department may release information about a concealed handgun licensee to criminal justice agencies for law enforcement purposes

Concealed carry folks must have a clean record to obtain that license. These are basically law abiding folks.

This personal info becoming public creates too many opportunities for bad guys to abuse it one way or another. Also, there is a fair amount of bias against lawful owners of firearms.

There are exemptions to public records - this just strikes me as one of those things that ought to be exempt. Generally, too much downside and very little upside to publishing these types of things.

OR Target the homes that they know will not be protected???

The WRAL could end up with a wrongful death suit or maybe seen by a young aggressive DA as aiding and abiding a homicide??

Sadly, much as I like the personalities on WRAL, they have an unabashedly liberal bias. Unfortunately, so does every other local broadcast station and their "on-air personalities" aren't nearly as palatable. The MSM is no longer the watchdog/mouthpiece of a free people.

For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.

Why even have a license?

It tells the authorities(?) who you are and where you live. This is how it started in England. The government decided to outlaw guns, and all they had to do was go to your door and confiscate them. The cops even laughed and joked how it was like taking candy from a baby.

What could possibly go wrong.

Kelly Hinchcliffe, who produced this thoughtful project that pries into the private lives of law abiding citizens, is available on Twitter https://twitter.com/recordsgeek

FWIW, Ammoland.com communicated its concerns with WRAL (source).
Quote:
WRAL web editor Kelly Hinchcliffe responded to complaints by insisting that permit information is public record, ignoring the fact that obtaining it requires a written request to the State Bureau of Investigation. Moreover, although the names of permit-holders were not disclosed, the partial address information (including apartment numbers), particularly on small streets, makes it possible for criminals to target specific homes for theft.

A lengthy conversation with WRAL General Manager Steve Hammel, while pleasant, produced no significant movement on the part of the station. Their position is that they have sufficiently de-identified the address information. When it was noted that street numbers had appeared initially for some records, he noted that it had been corrected by Friday. He also said they would “look at” trailing apartment numbers which are still part of the addresses. But the bottom line is that the station refuses to pull the link.

I just posted on their facebook page:

And they deleted it in less than 60 seconds.
