Because republicans are stupid and do not traditionally think well on their feet.
In a similar situation, a democrat would have simply accused someone of being a racist or scolded them for caring about money more than the lives of innocent children.
If that didn't work, they'd have simply become indignant and shouted, " What difference at this point does it make"
