On a small note, Abu Syaff have never been a "religious" organization.

They essentially comprise of son's of former pirates, who's ancestor's were always pirates who killed/kidnapped/attacked kumpits (trading boats) going all the way back as far as the 1600's.

Zambonga was the main hub for the Sultan of Sulu and his band of pirates and they claimed much of North Borneo as part of the family "empire" though they had no maps or actual claims to North Borneo.

With blood families through marriage or direct descendents in Sabah, North Borneo and the Philippines, it is common for a filipino suluk to have dual passports and different names on both passports that allows them to criss-cross/enter/leave both countries at their whim and fancy.
