America's reputation as an ally is suspect at best, thanks to Teddy Kennedy and his ilk. The withdrawal of support for South Vietnam has severely damaged the vision of American long term comittment in the eyes of small countries. If you look back at the strategy pursued after WWII, the U.S. has maintained a presence in Germany, Japan and Korea. Germany and Japan got with the program and joined the modern world, South Korea also. If we expect to bring Afghanistan into the 21st Century, we should follow the successful examples post WWII- Pre-Vietnam.
