Not to take anything from this true tragedy, but the reporter or briefer didn't do his homework. The sapper attack at Danang in Aug 1968 accounted for 28 US and 40+ indig. There was a change over meeting in progress converting the FOBs to autonomous commands, CCN, CCC and CCS. All of the wheels from the FOBs as well as MACV SOG in Saigon were in the compound. The sappers missed by a few buildings, striking the NCO barracks. They could have dealt an almost fatal blow to SOG had they hit the visiting officer billets.

The CCN compound was attacked by enemy demolition, suicide element of more than 100 NVA which had infiltrated into the compound throwing satchel charges and firing away with AK rifles. The fighting raged on for more than three hours. (One source, reports 28 Americans and 41 Montagnard Commandos were killed).
