History

Yes, the move was finalized in June 1995.

I worked with the JSOMTC(P) planning cell when MG Shacknow and (then LTG ) Downing, USASOC approved moving the program of instruction from 300-F1 at Fort Sam Houston/18D30 at Fort Bragg to a single, combined 18D3/4 POI at Fort Bragg.

The reasoning at the time was saving over $3.3M in PCS costs. Back then, as the 300-F1 course was 31 weeks long, Soldiers PCS’d along with their families and household goods to Fort Sam Houston (now JBSA). 300 F-1 graduates then PCS’d to Fort Bragg for the second half of their “Advanced Medlab” training. The 300-F1 portion still had around a 45 percent attrition rate so many of the unsuccessful Soldiers were a loss to the SF community and moved on to become 91B Medics (now 68W) with the AMEDD community.

The AMEDD fought the change tooth and nail (it’s medical…it’s ours!!), but lost in the end because once the counting of stars was finished, SWCS and USASOC won. Many of the “Low Intensity Conflict Division” SF instructors were also pissed because they owned homes in San Antonio.

I live in San Antonio and work with the AMEDDC&S now and again and I can tell you any move from there to SWCS was a positive one. AMEDD is notorious for not producing the best instructors and there were numerous distractions for the SF candidates such as many “team queens wanting to earn a beret” on a Friday night.

I went through in 1984 and it was amazing what you could convince a 2LT Nurse to do after a Lone Star long neck (or two).
