I run into that with both family and many of my collegues - yet, most (who make any real money anymore) work hard to reduce what they pay in various taxes - when they could voluntarily contribute more any time they wanted to.
I guess they care more...but not enough to take a larger hit in the pocketbook to walk the walk
unless they impose their misery on the rest of us.
In my observations many Dems are quite receptive to emotional stimuli - that is - their voting position can be readily moved by emotional advertisements/arguments. And, that makes some sense as Madison Ave. has sold hundreds of shades, flavors, packaging, etc., etc.
Moreover, many Dems that I encounter see themselves as the party of the "little person"...the "working man." Unfortunately, the Dem party of
that person appears to me to have been hijacked by the extreme left, decades ago.
MOO, the "we care more" attitude also provides many Dems and their sympathizers with an artificial air of superiority for various political positions on various subjects. In many Dem's eyes, it seems to me, that non-Dems are wayward souls to be educated or indoctrinated, depending who you are dealing with... 'cause they care more.
ETA: I suspect that we all care...or at least many do...but we disagree on how to get it done. YMMV.
