Brooklyn man charged with conspiracy in terror probe

A Brooklyn man who allegedly traveled to Pakistan to train with supporters of al-Qaida has been indicted on charges he conspired to commit murder of U.S. citizens abroad, officials said.

Betim Kaziu, 21, a U.S. citizen, was charged in an indictment unsealed Thursday with devising a plan earlier this year to travel abroad to join radical fighters and take up arms against perceived enemies of Islam, said Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Benton Campbell.

A U.S. magistrate-judge ordered Kaziu detained without bail late Thursday. His case is not related to the larger indictment unsealed against Najibullah Zazi, 24, who was accused of conspiring to construct bombs for use in the United States.
