When did 300f1 move from Sam to Bragg?

I went through 300F1 at Fort Sam in 86-87. Was wondering exactly when it moved from Fort Sam to Fort Bragg.

I went through Ft. Sam 89-90 and IIRC the new facility opened while I was in language training late 90. I think the 300F1 course began about '92 at Bragg.

Could be wrong though my memory fades.

It moved in 1995.

I personally disagree with the move but, I don't make the rules.

It DID help the graduation rates....(whole lot less distractions)

:D

We did have some great "distractions" though. One of my classmates and I were dating a couple lab techs. I broke up with mine when we left for Bragg. He is still married to his girl.
I wonder if Betty's Bn is still there?
Reason I asked is because we have a guy applying for work with my company and he says he was an 18D but his CV doesn't look right.

History

Yes, the move was finalized in June 1995.

I worked with the JSOMTC(P) planning cell when MG Shacknow and (then LTG ) Downing, USASOC approved moving the program of instruction from 300-F1 at Fort Sam Houston/18D30 at Fort Bragg to a single, combined 18D3/4 POI at Fort Bragg.

The reasoning at the time was saving over $3.3M in PCS costs. Back then, as the 300-F1 course was 31 weeks long, Soldiers PCS’d along with their families and household goods to Fort Sam Houston (now JBSA). 300 F-1 graduates then PCS’d to Fort Bragg for the second half of their “Advanced Medlab” training. The 300-F1 portion still had around a 45 percent attrition rate so many of the unsuccessful Soldiers were a loss to the SF community and moved on to become 91B Medics (now 68W) with the AMEDD community.

The AMEDD fought the change tooth and nail (it’s medical…it’s ours!!), but lost in the end because once the counting of stars was finished, SWCS and USASOC won. Many of the “Low Intensity Conflict Division” SF instructors were also pissed because they owned homes in San Antonio.

I live in San Antonio and work with the AMEDDC&S now and again and I can tell you any move from there to SWCS was a positive one. AMEDD is notorious for not producing the best instructors and there were numerous distractions for the SF candidates such as many “team queens wanting to earn a beret” on a Friday night.

I went through in 1984 and it was amazing what you could convince a 2LT Nurse to do after a Lone Star long neck (or two). :lifter

Some of the guys got together and rented a house that was part of the 1968 World's Fair, HemisFair '68. It had a huge pool and diving towers... the nurses were often recruited as life guards... um... yup that's what they were, lifeguards. They even came with their own MayWest preservers...

As much as I enjoyed my time at 300F1 (1991), I agree that the course is better served having guys up at Ft. Bragg instead. And not just to decrease distractions, either. I had a few reservations about some of our (civilian, retired regular army NCO) instructors at Ft. Sam....

We are not worthy

Doc Farr,
I was one of your students at 300F1 back in 87. We were Chief Olson's first ortho class. Am very glad to see you on this site. Am guessing you are working as hard as ever, driving your convertible bug around TX or FL, still elbow deep in someone's chest on a daily basis.
Semper Gumby sir.

I was down there Apr of 14 -> Betty's is still there. IIRC, Tommy Grace ended up marrying "Betty".
