Yeah, cobras have to strike straight down and they are relatively slow compared to vipers. I have seen a Thai handler throw his beret on the ground and caught the snake as it raised back up from the strike. I talked to a Thai Master Sergeant on their snake show team. He was bitten on the thumb by a King Cobra and was in a coma for a month.

Our fat and lazy puff adder is known to be the fastest striker. The old wives tale is that they strike backwards, but that comes from only seeing their recoil, not the forward strike. Luckily, they are not too quick across the ground, but thats why you step on them.

Puff Adders and Gaboon Vipers are nasty.
