Quiz Time - Words 101

Anyone know what this is from?

TR

O Fortune,
like the moon
you are changeable,
ever waxing
and waning;
hateful life
first oppresses
and then soothes
as fancy takes it;
poverty
and power
it melts them like ice.

Fate - monstrous
and empty,
you whirling wheel,
you are malevolent,
well-being is vain
and always fades to nothing,
shadowed
and veiled
you plague me too;
now through the game
I bring my bare back
to your villainy.

Fate is against me
in health
and virtue,
driven on
and weighted down,
always enslaved.
So at this hour
without delay
pluck the vibrating strings;
since Fate
strikes down the string man,
everyone weep with me!

tis the oft borrowed song of Bueren:

O Fortuna,
velut Luna,
status variabilis,
semper cresis
aut decresis;
vita detestabilis
nunc obdurat
et tunc curat
ludo mentis aciem,
egestatem
potestatem
dissolvit ut glaciem.

Where do the words (in Latin) appear?

Second part.

I bemoan the wounds of Fortune
with weeping eyes,
for the gifts she made me
she perversely takes away.
It is written in truth,
that she has a fine head of hair,
but, when it comes to seizing an opportunity
she is bald.

On Fortune's throne
I used to sit raised up,
crowned with
the many-coloured flowers of prosperity;
though I may have flourished
happy and blessed,
now I fall from the peak
deprived of glory.

The wheel of Fortune turns;
I go down, demeaned;
another is raised up;
far too high up
sits the king at the summit -
let him fear ruin!
for under the axis is written
Queen Hecuba.

Also known as Carmina Burana.

Nice to see it translated into English, I have copies of it in only Latin and Spanish. I like Carl Orff's version of Carmina Burana the most.

I googled "fate - monstrous" to find it. The original lyrics are a mix of latin and german.

Once I realized what it was, I had it playing in my head all night. Thanks for the reminder that there is a second part..

:boohoo <---corde pulsum tangite; quod per sortem sternit fortem, mecum omnes plangite!

Very good. Orff's is the version I was referring to. I love that song!

Also a movie it is prominent in. Any guesses?

hmmm....

Natural Born Killers

or

The 13th Warrior ? <-- my guess

Edit to add (only because it is TR and his penchant for good rock)

The Doors

;)

I'm pretty sure I heard it in Van Helsing but I know it's been used in a lot of horror type movies, the south park movie trailer also

Pandora 05-14-2004 06:53

Excalibur?

CommoGeek 05-14-2004 06:56

Carmina Burana was in "Glory" and "The Doors."

Great song. I have the whole opera on CD.

One of our yearly MG shoots has Carmina Burana playing in the background, i agree it is a great song.

.45ACP 05-14-2004 10:22

Excalibur is one of my favorites, I own it on video. I always thought one of the best applications of music to a film is when they play "Carmina Burana" as they ride into battle on horseback.

The song is also on "Jackass--The Movie," unfortunately lol.
