In furtherance of a previous thread in here regarding Phelps and the Church of Hate:

It's amazing how a just cause can bring the most unlikely folks together on common ground.

Kan. Church to Stop Picketing Funerals By KELLY KURT, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 36 minutes ago

TULSA, Okla. - A small Kansas church known for its anti-gay protests said Wednesday it has stopped picketing for now at soldiers' funerals in states with new laws against the practice.

"We're not going to get arrested. We obey the law," said Shirley Phelps-Roper, an attorney and member of Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, a fundamentalist congregation headed by her father, the Rev. Fred Phelps.

Westboro Baptist has outraged mourning communities across the nation by showing up at soldiers' funerals with signs that read "God Hates Fags" or "God Made IEDs," a reference to roadside bombs. Members of the congregation contend soldiers are being struck down by God for defending a nation that tolerates homosexuality.

In response, several states have passed or considered legislation restricting when and where pickets may demonstrate at funerals. Violators can be fined or jailed.

Westboro Baptist canceled demonstrations at funerals this past week in Oklahoma, Indiana, Missouri and Wisconsin, which have new laws limiting such protests.

Phelps-Roper said the group will eventually protest in states with the new laws, but it will find a way to obey the new laws.

She also said the church is considering legal challenges to the laws. "We're waiting until all the legislatures are over to see what tattered shreds they've left the Constitution in," she said.

One of the few times I sit down and view the MSN news was just a few days ago. I think it was CNN that I flipped to. One of the reporters was doing a story on that strange Phelps crew.

It came out to be a comedy. When the reporter tried to talk to Phelps all he could say was "You know what I mean" and "You're a pervert". Over and over. The reporter was almost laughing by the time it was over.

That Phelps is one pasty face looking dude. That guy is not secure in his own manhood and probably has nightmares about group gay sex.

My big question though is how come if Phelps is such a vocal anti-gay person the gay community is not protesting at his church? Oh, thats right, he's targeting the US Army. That puts him and the gays on the same side.

Or fantasies...

I would hope all of the States will put through similar laws like those already mentioned, though I'm sure some won't.

Those vermin came to the funeral of SF SSG Chris Piper in my hometown (Marblehead, MA) this summer. Almost the entire town showed up to pay their respects, including me, and people were not happy about the presence of these anti-Americans. But we all ignored them and they didn't get the publicity they clearly hoped for -- unless they were looking for a page 5 article in the Marblehead Reporter.

Almost every single one of the members of the Westboro Baptist church is a member of his immediate family by blood or marriage. Their "legal counsel" is one of his daughters who is also an attorney (Fred himself has been disbarred) and the majority of their funding comes from winning those lawsuits. They file almost as many lawsuits as they have protests and have won very large settlements, one of which was close to $250K, from the city and county they are from which is just 40 minutes West of me. We get to hear from this jackass all the time over here.

I just got an email through the Patriotguard that says Paula Zahn will be covering Phelps on her show this evening. I believe that will be at 8 Eastern/7 Central.

My wife and I were discussing this today and I can't help but wonder if the whole thing isn't an elaborate scam. We have already seen that there are apparently no depths to which conartists will not sink. When you combine Phelp's decidedly bizzare views with the fact that all of his money has been made from lawsuits tied to his protests and the fact that the benefactors of said lawsuits are all members of his family and the fact that he clearly lacks the courage of his convictions and folded the first time jail was mentioned certainly looks suspicios.

One of my state Reps., Stan Jordan I believe, has introduced a bill to increase the penalties and fines for protesting at ANY funeral for any reason.

If that penalty is death by hanging, in a public square, attended by the families of the slain patriots he has offended, and the flogging of the remainder of his family prior to execution of said penalty-then Rep Jordan just made my Christmas list!

LOL...too true, but sadly, no. His bill was to make the fine $1K and up to a year in jail. The current law is something like a $500 fine and 30 or 60 days in jail. I think his bill makes it a higher degree of a misdemeanor.

Hanging in public isn't a bad idea though....

It is not a scam in any way and they have been doing shit like this for years but first coming to real national prominence when they protested Matthew Shepard's funeral. Since then it has just gotten worse and while they have shied away from states that have recently enacted laws against protesting at funerals they will be back. They have several family members who are attorney's and I guarantee they will be preparing law suits challenging those laws. After all a good sum of their expense money comes from winning lawsuits against governments.

Try living near these idiots, you can't throw a rock without hitting one of their protests.
