PRESS RELEASE: Special Forces Soldier killed in Iraq

U.S. Army Special Operations Command

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, Feb. 5, 2006) — A U.S. Army special operations Soldier based here died Feb. 3, 2006, while engaging the enemy during a firefight in the vicinity of Ramadi, central Iraq.

Sgt. 1st Class Lance S. Cornett, 33, a special operations team member was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Ft. Bragg, N.C and was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Cornett was killed in action Feb. 3, 2006. He died from injuries sustained while engaging the enemy during a firefight in the vicinity of Ramadi.

Cornett was born July 11, 1972, in San Diego, Ca., and graduated from Laurel County High School in London, Ky.

He first entered the U. S. Army as an infantryman on August 13, 1991, and after completion of initial entry training, was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 14th Infantry Brigade, 10th Mountain Division. Since that time, Cornett served in 6th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 101st Airborne Division; F Co, 51st Infantry Long Range Surveillance Detachment, 519th Military Intelligence Battalion; Delta Company, 4th Ranger Training Brigade; Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Ranger Training Brigade. He was assigned to the United States Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, North Carolina in May of 2004.

Cornett's military training includes the Air Assault Course, the Basic Airborne Course, the Sniper Course, the Sapper Leader Course, the Ranger Course, the Pathfinder Course, the Static Line Jumpmaster Course, the Basic and the Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Course, the Special Forces Diving Supervisor Course and the Military Freefall Jumpmaster Course.

Cornett’s awards and decorations included two Bronze Star Medals with Valor Device, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, three Army Commendation Medals, nine Army Achievement Medals, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, four Army Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon with numeral three, the Army Service Ribbon, the Ranger Tab, the Sapper Tab, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Expert Infantryman's Badge, the Pathfinder Badge, the Military Freefall Jumpmaster Badge, the Master Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge and the Special Operations Diver Badge.
