Iraq: British troops pull back as US reduces force in Iraq (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,7374-1958040,00.html)- Tony Blair set the clock ticking for British troops to start withdrawing from Iraq in six months’ time as the United States announced a withdrawal of two combat brigades from the country. The news came as it emerged that more than 1,000 British soldiers had already been pulled back from frontline duties. Troops in half the area under British control have stopped routine patrols and have returned to their barracks, The Times has learnt. Senior defence sources said that the 800 British troops in Maysan province and 300 in Muthana province had switched to a "tactical overwatch" role — remaining in their barracks and only going out on patrol with the Iraqi security forces when they asked for help. This is the first stage in withdrawing altogether from the provinces, following a similar pattern adopted in Northern Ireland. The tactics were disclosed shortly before Donald Rumsfeld, the US Defence Secretary, announced that President Bush would reduce the American force in Iraq by up to 10,000 troops early in the new year.… (Times of London (http://www.timesonline.co.uk))

Sri Lanka: Suspected rebels hit S.Lanka navy bus, kill 13 (http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/SP117295.htm) - Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels ambushed and killed 13 Sri Lankan sailors in an attack on a naval convoy in northern Sri Lanka on Friday in the worst breach of a 2002 ceasefire so far. Military spokesmen said the rebels used a combination of claymore fragmentation mines -- blocks of plastic explosive that blast a hail of ball bearings towards targets -- as well as rocket propelled grenades (RPG) and assault rifles to hit the naval bus and truck in the northern district of Mannar.… (Reuters Alertnet (http://www.alertnet.org))

Chad/Sudan: Chad says "state of belligerence" exists with Sudan (http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L2326154.htm) - Chad said on Friday a "state of belligerence" existed between itself and its neighbour Sudan following attacks on a border town by rebels it said were armed by the Sudanese government. "Chad is today in a state of belligerence with Sudan," the government said in a statement which described Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir as an "enemy of Chad".… (Reuters Alertnet (http://www.alertnet.org))

Japan/China: Japan claims China poses 'considerable' military threat (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/core/Content/displayPrintable.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/12/23/wjapan23.xml&site=5) - Japan's new foreign minister has awakened an old feud with China by attacking its lack of transparency and describing its increased military spending as a "threat". Taro Aso said: "It's a neighbouring country with nuclear bombs, and its military expenditure has been on the rise for 12 years. It's beginning to pose a considerable threat." Mr Aso's words drew an angry response from China, which has itself attacked Japan for its "militarism". A spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry said: "As a foreign minister, to so irresponsibly incite such groundless rhetoric about a China threat, what is the purpose?" China is trying to persuade the world that its economic rise, accompanied by military modernisation, is driven by peaceful intent. It is also critical of Japan, and its prime minister, Junichiro Koizumi, for paying respects at the Yasukuni war shrine, which it says honours war criminals. Mr Koizumi has shown little sign of backing down. He risked a flare-up of feeling in China by appointing Mr Aso, a noted hawk, in October.(The Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk))

Israel: Israel threatens Gaza strikes to clear rocket zone (http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L23201927.htm) - Israel threatened on Friday to stop Palestinian militants firing rockets from the Gaza Strip by using airstrikes and shelling to enforce a buffer zone inside the territory it abandoned three months ago. The makeshift rockets rarely cause casualties, but could have big political fallout as Prime Minister Ariel Sharon campaigns for re-election on the strength of a pullout from Gaza that he said would boost Israel's security. Despite the withdrawal, the rocket firing has not stopped, and Israel has mounted air and artillery strikes on Gaza. (Reuters Alertnet (http://www.alertnet.org))

The Philippines: MILF ranks increasing in western Mindanao (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/topofthehour.aspx?StoryId=25506) - Increasing disillusionment with goverment peace treaties has helped raise the ranks of the 11,000-strong Moro Islamic Liberation Front in western Mindanao, MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu said Friday. Kabalu denied that there was a recruitment drive to beef up MILF troops, adding that the new recruits voluntarily approached Moro field commanders to join the MILF.… (ABS/CBN News (http://ww.abs-cbnnews.com/))

Abdul Rahman Ayub - named as one of the JI chiefs who set up a chapter known as Mantiqi4 in Sydney before moving to Perth - is believed to have been training JI operatives on the island for at least the past year. Terror expert Zachary Abuza said Ayub was one of 20 suspected JI members - including infamous bomb-maker Dulmatin, who has a $US10million ($13.5million) bounty on his head - hiding out on Mindanao.… (The Australian (http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au))

I didn't drop anything there the last time I visited and even if I did I wouldn't go back.

OK, I lied about that one. If they asked, I'd go.
