Hey, today, on XM, I heard Ray Wylie Hubbard doing a song called "Choctaw Bingo", from the CD "Delirium Tremolos".

It was one of those tunes that just flipped a switch for me, some sort of blues/folk/country/western/Native American/Texas bizarro fusion piece. The kind that would scare normal people if they knew you were listening to it. Especially the part when he talks about going into a gun store and buying an SKS, two cases of steel core ammo, and a Desert Eagle.

I knew the voice, but did not realize who he was till I got home and looked him up, discovering that he is 58 years old and did "Redneck Mothers" as well.

Not sure that I like his personal life, like Steve Earle or Willie Nelson, but he sure cranks out some great music.

Anybody else got any older, lesser known artists stuck in their heads?

Now don't hold this against me but there was this one time where we were flat out stuck in a placed that sucked and we only got one radio station. That was the year the Bangles (?) released "Slow Boat to China".

That station played that song at least once every 10 minutes for 3 plus weeks. That waaaaas torture. At the end it was like finger nails on a blackboard. I don't think I ever heard that song again.

Every time "song" comes up that one pops into my mind.

I know what you mean.

Two deployment CDs that stick in my mind are Bruce Springsteen's "Born In the USA" and Guns and Roses "Appetite for Destruction ".

Fortunately, neither contain anything as bad as The Bangles.

TR,

I know you're not likely to care for either group overall, but have you ever heard the Dead's "Me and My Uncle" or the New Riders' "Red Hot Women and Ice Cold Beer"? They might strike a chord with you (pun intended).

For me it's, C.W. MaCall.

Sure he's know for his song "CONVOY", but his first album (I think he released two), is always stuck in my head.

Especially living here in Colorado. Songs from the album included, "Black Bear Road", "Lewis and Clark", "The Green", some great story telling type songs.

How about Warren Zevon? I didn't think music could be discussed on this board without Zevon being mentioned.

Lawyers guns and Money, Werewolves of London, Roland the headless thompson gunner, Excitable boy, Etc.

Also,
Allen Wayne Damron has some good stuff, Especially the Gringo Pistolero. A google search for "Gringo Pistolero" took me right to his site.

Just off the top of my head, I'll say Jerry Reed's "Amos Moses" and "When You're Hot You're Hot." I lMAO every time I listen to either of those. Jerry Reed is one of the most underrated country artists there is. Of course, there's his anthem "Eastbown and Down," the theme song from the movie "Smokey and the Bandit."

On a related side note, if you're into metal, check out Manowar. They own all other metal bands. Still current and relevant, they faithfully crank out riffs with the power of a 7.62mm MG. "Warriors of the World (united)" should be mandatory listening for anyone who wears a uniform and carries a loaded weapon...

So, your going to shy away from RuthAnne and Lynne?

any song that starts
"Strap them kids in
Give 'em a little bit of vodka in a cherry coke
We're going to Oklahoma to the family reunion"..
is ok with me.

I believe it was written by James McMurtry( Son of Larry McMurtry, who authored Lonesome Dove)

I love the song. I several family members that would fit nicely into the narrative.

I spent a lot of time this year listening to Solomon Burke at 71+/- he brings it hard.

TR, for Texas music try Stevie Ray Vaughn "Texas Flood", "Voodoo Child", or "This House is A Rockin'" or the Van Zants, especially Ronnie who was a founding member and lead singer of Lynard Skynard and wrote "Freebird". His Younger brothers Johnny and Donnie have banded together and you might like their new country album Get Right with the Man.

:D . Watch out for that fencepost.

I believe that he said to give them Benadryl, but the sentiment is similar.

McMurtry was doing a song on XM today, and I think I heard Jerry Jeff Walker too. McMurtry did write the "Choctaw Bingo".

I am familiar with all of the above.

I think I have all of the Stevie Ray collection, and quite a bit of the Van Zants.

When I was in Puerto Rico, I used to fall asleep with Stevie Ray playing in the background. Annoyed the neighbors with it as well.

I've been on a Tom Waits kick lately. I've had "Jockey full of Bourbon" and "Tango 'til They're Sore" going round and round in my head all week. Plus I got his newest album "Real Gone" which has its share of good stuff.

When ever I eat my favorite sausage, I think of the original "RAP" song of my youth (1961) Big John by Jimmy Dean..........

...And with all of his strength he gave a mighty shove
Then a miner yelled out "There's a light up above!"
And twenty men scrambled from a would-be grave
Now there's only one left down there to save-Big John

This is too fun............how about Ray Stevens "The StreaK"

The Streak
Hello everybody, this is your action news reporter
With all the news that is news across the nation
On the scene at the super market
There seems to have been some disturbance here
Pardon me sir, did you see what happened?
Yeh, I did...I was standing over there by the tomatoes
And here he come
Running thru the pole beans, thru the fruits and vegetables
Naked as a jay-bird
And I hollered over at Ethel...Isaid don't look Ethel
It was too late, she'd already been incensed...

Chorus

Here he comes, boogie-dy, boogie-dy
There he goes, boogie-dy, boogie-dy
And he ain't wearin' no clothes
Oh yes, they call him the streak
Fastest thing on two feet
He's just as proud as he can be
Of his anatomy
He's gonna give us a peek
Oh yes, they call him the streak
He likes to show off his physique
If there's an audience to be found
He'll be streakin' around
Invitin' public critique...

This is your action news reporter once again
And we're here at the gas station
Pardon me sir, did you see what happened?
Yeh, I did...I was just in here gettin' my tires checked
And he just appeared out of the traffic
Come streakin' around the grease rack there
Didn't have nothing on but a smile
I looked in there and Ethel was gettin' her a cold drink
I hollered...Don't look Ethel
It was too late...She'd already been mooned
Flashed her right there in front of the shock absorbers

For the youth.........streaking was a popular occurrence at such events as basketball games, graduations, weddings, the more pompous the ceremony the more likely an occurrence.

I'm pretty sure I don't want to hear either Joe Paterno or Bobby Bowden sing, I would, however like to nominate them into the old guys that rock category. I think it is amazing that they can still bring fire to work everyday.

Amazing. I should be so fortunate.

"Maggot Brain" by the Funkadelics and "DOA" by Bloodrock. Back in the early 70's Cleveland had their first FM station. Every Saturday and Sunday morning at 0230 they would play "Maggot Brain" for those who were driving home after a hard night of partying. "DOA" came on right after that for those that didn't make it home.:)

Wall of Voodoo's remake of Ring of Fire.

Talking Heads - Burning Down The House

David Bowie - Fashion

All those songs have the ability to transport me back to a very.... ummm... interesting time in my life. Good stuff back then. A lot more diversity than what seems to have come out in the last two decades.
