I was cooking at Thanksgiving, and as a recipe called for bourbon, I got the best as recommended: Maker's Mark. When I went to open it, I realised I had to do something with that red waxy stuff over the cap. I solved the problem, but looking back I thought there might be a "right" way to do it. Being a drinking novice, I started wondering what sorts of ways there might be to deal with all the subtleties of distillate enjoyments. I don't mind admitting I don't drink all that often, but I don't want to be a complete goof.
What are some of the things I should be aware of should I explore this field further? You could start with how should I have gotten that Maker's Mark open.
P.S. - it was very good! I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed it. And the cranberry sauce was out of this world.

There is a little tab embedded in the wax. You pull it in a circular motion and it breaks the wax around the cork.
Pour the whiskey in a glass, neat or over ice. Smell it. Then drink it. :)

May I ask how you alternatively solved the problem ??? Scored it with a knife?

When it comes to high class imbibers like me it is "Get it, pop it, and drink it.":p
All of those ettiquette things like reading the label, sniffing, swizzling etc take too long and spoi the fu Besides, 3/4 of the time a waiter brings a bottle of wine to the table to read the label, sniff, and test, the customer has no idea what he is doing anyway. I usually wave off the extras and say "POUR".:D

I am with you on this one, I mean really...open the sucker, drink it...that's it's sole purpose in life.
Another good burbon is Old Charter...relatively cheap, but really good on the rocks.
And as far as those waiters bringing the bottle....Im with you on that one too...pour it, unless I have to finance the bottle.

m1's rules for wine:
If it's red, drink it
If it's white, save it for company
If it's pink, clean the bathroom with it.

Ah, yes. Those are rules I can live by...
My grandmother-in-law has a bourbon ball recipe that'll knock you on...that will make you really happy. I'll have to get it and post it.

I was 17 before I fund out all wines didn't come with screw caps. I flipped out when Boones Farm got it's second flavor. I just about lived on Boone's Farm until I turned 18. It got real slushy in the winter time.
That's why you carry a Swiss Army Knife, to get into the good stuff.

Remember in the seventies when you could get wine coolers in 2 liter bottles? Two of them weret good from Ft. Bragg to Myrtle Beach.

Can you still get wine in multi-gallon containers for the fridge? My dad went thru a phase where he thought that was fine living at one point.
Michelle, scored the bottom of the cap with a knife. It produces sharp edges on the wax which is unpleasant.

You can here. A lot of wines are aged in the vats rather than in the bottle. You save the cost of the bottles buying bulk in boxes.
