3/5th from Nov 74 to Dec 87 mostly on 571/575 the SCUBA Team.
Then came back as the SGM for A/3/5th from Dec 92 - Dec 94.
And in that time A/3/5th moved from the north side of Gruber Road to the south side, then over to the Old Division Area and then to Ft Campbell.
Who remembers when the GB Club was up in the old hospital area next to the now Old Womack?

Was on the "Killer B's" With Bill Davis, then over to 572. SGM Cartwright (R.I.P) was the Co SGM, then the Grape, Gary Gilmore.
I went back to 5th (at Campbell) in Jun 96 after tours in SWC and 3d Gp.

Two things, 1. I was Tm Sgt of 585 from 89 to Feb 92 when I retired. but I didn't ROAD. 2. A question to ODA 572 was the TM SGT Johnny A. Axxxxxx nick named 'half face" If it's the one I know and served with, he had Bell's Palsey on OKI and picked up the nick name. Blitz

John A. did have Bell's Palsey. I always said he looked like a pirate with one bulging eye and a drooping grin. But it never slowed him down. He was TS of the HALO team of A/3/5 when I became his light weapons sgt.
He's now with Archangel out in Colorado. Opinions very on that. Out of past respect I read his book, "The Green Beret in You". A little thick on the virtues of being SF but the world would be a better place if more people behaved that way.
Still a great guy in my book.

Haaaaa, was alittle of both. He decided to warm up his barrel by shooting at a tree between me and him (not at the warm-up target)....guess what?? bullets don't exactly exit straight out of the tree:rolleyes: It was at the stairwell apparatus.
John jordan was standing slightly to the right rear of me. We kept hearing that "zip/pop" sound and wondered what it was. He (the sniper stud) had by the time he got me cracked off about three/four rounds.
Shoulda known to "hit the dirt" after the first one, after hearing that in the wharehouse apparatus more than once:D

That was the vanilla version Jordan. At the time he was 572 TSGT. I hear he's running a tourguide gig out of ....crap there goes my memory again, I think California.
Yeah, poor Sherm, was a great guy. I'm reminded of him often, I work near Mike Pevlar and Bill Gregory, they were on that jump.

We didn't - all the A Teams were out on the 17 day survival FTX.
But you have to blaim somebody so blaim it on the A Teams.

The A Teams were on a 17 day survival FTX.
The whole story involves the A Teams in the field, the remainder of the Bn at Orro Grande, one of the 5Th Gp forward's survival PIs, the Fish & Game folks and the Commander at Ft Bliss.
A few know most of the moving parts, most only know a piece or two. And as far as I know the individual that started everything is dead.

I remember being out side the compound along the base of some mountains only to be greeted by green tracers being fired from what appeared to be the compound area. I believe the attached medivac vehicle at the compound area was flipped over, a rental car fired upon and most everyone well hammered. As I recall there was quite a bit of 'splainen to do once Group got the word.
I didn't have the gracious opportunity to be on that trip. I just renlisted and had that semester of college option...thank you!
That would have been yet "another trip" that we had our rights read to upon landing;)
But, yeah, the stories were flowing. I didn't hear anything of that magnitude though, sounds like the cartels were at Ore Grande, ohhh the memories.

Ah, yes, Black Rock. Was that not some fun. Step off the 141, get stuffed in a Duece 'n 1/2, driven to Group HQ plopped down by yourself in a room with 2 butt wipes in civilian cloths and read your rights.

Another clear case of nobody in charge taking the time to read any after action reports of previous trips.

Glebo - everybody said it was a Mamba but I say it was some kind of puff adder - thick ugly looking brute. Every trip seemed to turn up at least one of them under a cot or team box. Give you a good start went you saw it.

The small herd of goats that were living on the roof of a six story apartment complex in downtown Alexandria, Egypt. The cattle and sheep that were on the dropzone in Morocco when we jumped in. We weren't smelling too rosey after that one. The crocodiles in the river that the Somali soldiers were throwing our garbage to. And finally, the drunk Irish sailors that were at the bar in the Port of Aqaba, Jordan.
What I'd pay to relive some of the adventures of my youth...

I reported into LTC Jacobelly in early October of 1984 as he was packing up his stuff in his office, I was told by MAJ McGarrah that he expected to be releived by the group commander for the "Beer Bash" in Oro Grande. And the story continues to grow!

In June of 68, the volunteers for C&C DET from those assigned to the 5th Group were very slim. I saw one Hispanic E-5 and my sad ass volunteer. Then a sharp CPT who had extended his tour and came from the Viet Airborne Advisor program pumped my brain for info, and; I do not BS senior more experienced men. He took my place /slot for FOB2. The E-5 medic went to CCN, the CPT to FOB2 via CCN, and; I went to C-5. I was pulled aside by the Group S-1 and told I would be in on the ground floor of a new C&C DET. That LTC did me a favor as I was on the staff for 56 days, had a company for almost 6 months , was sent to the northern launch site, then was asst S-3 before being hit several times 14 days later. I met many lifetime friends at Omega and CCS. I was lucky to meet the Sigma officers and senior NCO's in mid 68, and; they helped us a lot when CCS was formed later. I was truly blessed to have so many great NCO's and sharp officers to learn from. TY

Hmmm....I recall eating the goats somewhere in Somalia & wishing I was back in Cairo:eek: Never did find a mamba thank god. I was told the Somali garter snake in compound was venomous. What wasn't?

PS That's also the same trip that Jake in the daily BN meeting looked over to the XO and asked "do you want to hit this MF or do you want me to". He was speaking about CPT Realini (S4 OIC) at the time.
That's when I decided to step outside.
I liked Jake. He always told it like it was. I met up with him again years later when he showed up at Battery Pratt in Panama just before that ordeal kicked off. I was glad to see he survived that fiasco as there were definitely some head hunters after the Oro Grande incident.

Our team was packing up to go to the Carrib as the rest of 3rd Bn was going off for a winter warfare FTX.
We took out pallet up to Green Ramp and I went over to ADAG with my -2s. SCUBA Team loaded out to the Max. After a bit of chit chat with the Air Force guys we handed over the -2s and asked for help to make sure everything was straight. In less than 5 minutes we were good to go.
As we were finishing Cpt Realini rolled up with a small detail and all of the Bn's pallets. He walked in, handed the -2s to the ADAG and said something to the effect of "Sign 'um, they're good to go."
The Air Force guys slowly looked through the stack, asked the Cpt if he had proper -2s for everything and the Cpt said he did. I was headed for the door as the AF guy said "I don't see any -2s for the propane bottles". Got to be a right good pissin' contest but I guess the Cpt lost because the AF said "break 'um down we want to check the pallets & team boxes for items that require -2s ".
Not a good day to be a small pallet detail member. Us? We beat a hasty retreat after a wink and a wave to the AF guys.
2nd story on the same S-4
For some reason the good Cpt hated to order in flight meals from the Air Force. He liked to pass out MREs for long flights. Our 180A hated MREs and kept telling the S4 how to order in flight meals. Talk about a downer for the rest of the troops, another trip, another MRE, land for fuel, an AF truck drives up "Is Chief C. here? Here are the 10 meals you ordered." Next stop "Here are the 10 meals you ordered." The rest of the guys looked on as we chowed down.
One time we landed in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night with a 141 full of Bn guys. The Chief, who carried many copies of our travel orders, simply called up the in flight kitchen, said he had orders for something like 60 guys and asked if they could come up with some food. By the time the plane was ready the food truck rolled up. The AF guys kept saying how sorry they were for the quality of the meals and that we could have gotten better if they had had more time. Heck, we were happy for what we got.

Someday I'll have to tell you the story of the good Cpt's previous assignment. It just so happens my brother was in the same unit in Italy as him pulling a 1SG duty prior to coming back to 10th GP. That's one for the books for sure.
By chance to you remember when Smitty Daisey chained two generators together to get enough power to start the C140 so we could fly home out of (Tunisia or Morocco). I can't remember which one it was now.

I seem to remember a lot of beer drinking, snow skiing, snowshoeing, yet more beer drinking, some cross country skiing and a little more beer drinking. I got to know SGM Strahan well on that trip. One night in a tavern way up in the mountains he told everyone at the table the story of Son Tay. It was interesting being in SF the time that I was because many of the legends were still around.

Realini was a real gem wasn't he? I remember while we were on Flintlock in Morocco during April-May of '85 he bought some interesting gifts at the bazaar in downtown Rabat. Well, somewhere between landing at Pope and unloading at BN S-4 his belongings somehow disappeared. He was ranting and raving and blaming all of the junior enlisted guys of stealing his stuff. One team sergeant who was in the vicinity looked at me and said "he fucked up when he put his name on it." I was pretty much neutral with him. I think I still have a picture of him somewhere in my archives.

I missed that particular trip. I think I may have been in O&I. By chance did you make the trip to Puerto Rico? I can't remember the year but I believe it was around 81 or 81. We had a pretty good survival phase. We were the last ones to go through so the lanes had been picked pretty clean of oranges. Heart of palm was pretty good though.
I remember one incident the last day (it was pretty much over). We ran across two teens (females) and I walked up to them asking (In Spanish) if they knew where we could buy some beer. Well come to find out they were from Boston of all places (figure the odds). Well we found a place and bought a bunch of beer and beans.
On my team every individual carried a bag of dry beans. It was pretty much SOP. Well that evening it stormed so we had a nice pot of beans going and put up our poncho hooches. For the life of me I can't remember the team leaders name right now but I remember him being drunk as a skunk, going over to get some beans off the fire. Well the next thing we know you hear this tumbling. The captain had slipped and rolled down this rather long, steep hill. He got up with a proud grin on is face saying "Didn't spill a bean.
On the mountain phase we had a 3 tiered decent. We put Paris Woodhams (Woody) in the stretcher and started down. Now Woody was longer than the darn stretcher so that was fun. The last tier we had to construct a suspension traverse to get to the bottom.
On my team at the time we had Woody, Max Recod, Dude Wicker, Buck Buchannon, Steve Mehl, Roy Rodgers, Bernie Mims, Joe Cannon, and a few others I can't remember right now.
Ahhhhhhh,
The good old days.
Not too long after that was when LT Vavra had his double malfunction. I ran across him a few years ago at the Special Operations Museum when I was working for Lockheed Martin.

I'm certian it was Tunisia because SFC Bob T. told me the story one time. He said that the Air Force even tried using the downwash from a helicopter to try and get one of the props to turn so that the engine would start. I guess once they got one engine started then they could start the rest. That failed but the generators worked. Strange what I remember sometimes.

I know what you mean. The Morocco tip was the sickest I have ever been in my life. One of the drivers invited me and John McCrae over to his house for dinner. We ate like kings but the next day I had it coming out of both ends at the same time. They had to stick a few IV's in me to get me hydrated. I just felt like I wanted to die.
I often wonder what happened to Bob. He was a great guy and devoted to his family.
I can still see Smitty like it was yesterday jumping up saying "I'm not staying another D&^* night in this country" and going to work splicing those generators together.
Smitty is still around Bragg too. I ran into him last year in Fayetteville.

How about a few more clues as to what you were doing then. There are a handful of guys here you might know. LTC Jacobelly was a good officer. He wasn't above having a beer with the guys.

MG Suddath made a suprise visit to Morocco onetime but we got a warning and were prepared. :D

I was there. I heard it. I remember that day because it was cold, clear and the inspection lasted like 2 1/2 hours. I remember because when he finally got to me he had a small icicle hanging down from his nose and it was hard not to laugh.
That may be ONE of the memories I'm supressing...:D
I do remember the fine rake line SOP we had when we moved from SBH to the old div area..everyday at 1630, them lines better be right!!:eek:

I think it was Spring of 1984. We (2nd Bn) were on post support. We got word that the Post commander's wife (Can't remember Gen name) didn't like all of the pine cones all over Fort Bragg. So for 2 weeks we walked/drove around picking up pine cones. Two weeks later, apparently the Gen's wife decided it didn't look natural without the pine cones so we drove around for another week throwing pine cones out of jeeps and duece and halves.
It sucked at the time but I still laugh about it now when I think about it.
Yeah, I heard about that one to. Tell some of those stories to the newere guys and they look at you like ya got a ....unicorn horn growin' out of your head...
I guess it really did take "Special" guys to put up with all that nonsense...

Dave Sims had us cutting the grass under the bleachers......get this...with scissors. The bleachers were to heavy to move to mow with a mower....so we went under them...with scissors...I shit you not..

We used to get a kick out of some private or Sr NCO from Div when they saw Sr SFC's and MSG's out there doing post support....they're like...WTF....over..
We'd tell them ya get bennies when your a Sr NCO in Gp....ya get to use the power tools....the manually operated ones are for the lower EM's..:D

I got a funny one. I was doing commo support onetime out at Mott Lake and was watching porno movies with some of the instructors at lunch time when LTC Tangney walked in and was mortified. There were no more pornos watched out there. A few weeks later he walked in again and we were watching the best of the Three Stooges. I can't remember exactly what he said but he didn't like that either.
The man had no sense of humor.

When I arrived to GRP the first thing I saw was a bunch of older gentlemen on riding lawn mowers, pushing mowers, and whacking weeds. I walked up to one of them, didn't know rank cause their BDU tops were off, and asked for directions to Bn S1. He pointed the way, shook my hand saying, "Welcome to 5th Mech" and smiled. I said, "thanks sergeant". He corrected me, "It's SGM".
I miss that about Group and the Teams, you all did your share and you had fun doing whatever with your brothers.
Also, if anyone knows Tony P. "Bucket-head" from 594 back in the day. I am wondering if he is doing ok. He patiently taught me how to shoot a pistol to a higher degree as well as advanced my knowledge on commo.
