PRESS RELEASE: Special Forces Soldier dies in Afghanistan

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, Nov. 16, 2005) — An Army Special Forces Soldier died Nov. 15 in the vicinity of Lawara, Afghanistan of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee.
Sgt. 1st Class James S. Ochsner, 36, a Special Forces intelligence sergeant assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, N.C., was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Ochsner was in the process of distributing supplies to local nationals at the time of the attack.
A Hope Mills, N.C. resident, Ochsner enlisted in the Army in 1987 as an artilleryman.
Ochsner arrived at 3rd SFG in July 2002.
His awards and decorations include two Bronze Star Medals, Army Commendation Medal for valor, Army Commendation Medal for service, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Driver and Mechanic Badges, and the Special Forces Tab.
Ochsner is survived by his wife, Ann, his son, Nicholas, and daughter, Meagan of Hope Mills. He is also survived by his parents, Robert and Sandra, of Beach Park, Ill.

"Jimbo" was a hell of a soldier. I was fortunate to correspond with him when he was in the 82nd. He contacted me because I was on the same team in Vietnam as his father, albeit at different times. I met both of them at the SFA reunion in 2002. I pray for him, his family and his friends.

1315-1330: Movement to Arlington Cemetery
1330: Arrive @ Arlington Cemetery
1330-1355: Park and marshal personnel @ Cemetery

On the 10th of DEC there is also a memorial planned for Jim at Our Lady of Humility in Zion, IL
A funeral mass was held at St. Matthews Cathedral in Washington, D.C. at noon today for Jim or as some of us called him Jimbo. After the service, which was attended by BG Muholland (spelling?), a CSM, a CWO5, with about 60 SF troops in uniform, we were bussed to Arlington National Cemetery. I estimate that the number of SF doubled by then. General Brown was the ranking officer. There were a lot of tears shed and dewy eyes out there. I was unable to speak with Jim's dad or mom or Anne, Jim's wife because of the crowd and they left before those in attendance. My Dai Uy & I spoke with Rob, Jim's brother and expressed our deep condolences. Jim's dad (Bob Sr.) was the XO at A-411. He came 4 days after I was medevaced. As upsetting as this was to all, this is the first time I've been to Arlington for a very recent KIA. The rows and rows of graves beyond Jim's grave are filled with young men who were KIA in OEF or OIF. It was something my wife noticed and mentioned later. I'm not the only father with a son in Iraq, but it made the day even more somber.

I went to the memorial, here on Bragg, and it was one of the toughest that I've been too. Until last year, I never realized that the Ballad of the Green Berets, was such a tear jerker. I also went up to D.C. and was impressed at how many people came. I would like to thank the D.C. police for escorting the entire procession, out to Arlington.
