Avs blow another lead; lose to Kings

Associated Press

10/19/2005 11:49:23 PM

DENVER (AP) - Craig Conroy was surprised to find himself with the puck on his stick, in position to score the easy goal that gave the Los Angeles Kings a come-from-behind victory.

Apparently, he hadn't seen much of the Colorado Avalanche lately.

Conroy's flip past David Aebischer with 58 seconds left Wednesday night gave the Kings a 5-4 win, and marked the second time in a week that Aebischer and the Avalanche blew a three-goal lead at home.

"You should win those games," Aebischer said. "Right now we are a little short. We've lost games weirdly."

Still, it was hard to credit this one merely to a bunch of new rules. Instead, Aebischer and Colorado's inattentive defence played a big role.

Never were they worse than at the end.

Conroy's game-winner - his first goal of the season - came after Aebischer went behind the net and stopped the puck for defenceman Rob Blake.

Blake arrived late, mishandled the puck and instead of clearing it and getting ready for overtime, Kings forward Alexander Frolov got there and rifled a pass in front of the net to Conroy, who put it by Aebischer from point-blank range.

Conroy said at first he didn't even plan on going to the goal because he didn't think there would be a scoring chance.

"I noticed, all of a sudden, Frolov was in there first," Conroy said. "He saw me open in the slot and made a nice pass. I think Aebischer would probably like to have that one back."

Less than a minute later, after the Avs pulled Aebischer and couldn't convert on their desperate 6-on-5 opportunities, the Kings mobbed goalie Mathieu Garon (17 saves) to celebrate their fifth win in six games. And the 443rd consecutive sellout at Pepsi Center let loose with boos.

The Avalanche finished 1-2-1 on their homestand, including a 5-4 loss to Nashville last Thursday after leading 3-0 early.

In that loss, Aebischer was guilty of a critical penalty that led to the winning power-play goal for the Predators. On this night, he was simply guilty of bad goaltending and victimized by his team's sloppy play.

The Kings tied it with 24 seconds left in the second. The goal came after the Avalanche turned it over in their own zone - a common sight during this homestand - and Eric Belanger collected the puck in the corner, lasered a pass across the crease to Sean Avery, who squeezed the puck between Aebischer's skate and the pipe.

"Goals four and five were unacceptable," Avalanche coach Joel Quenneville said. "You don't give up goals in the last minute of the period. And our play at the end of the game we were sloppy. Really sloppy."

The loss ruined a two-goal night for Ian Laperriere, a free-agent acquisition for Colorado this season after spending the last decade with the Kings. He scored twice and Andrew Brunette had a goal to give the Avs a seemingly comfortable 3-1 lead after the first period.

Joe Sakic scored his third goal of the season at the 6:35 mark of the second to push the lead to three. But then the Kings began their comeback.

"We have a team with a strong work ethic," Kings coach Andy Murray said. "We weren't going to sit back no matter what the score was. We had to force the issue."

This marked the first regular-season game on the ice for Avalanche defenceman Brad May, who took a vicious shot on Mattias Norstrom in the second period, charging him into the boards.

May is the former Vancouver player who infamously called for a bounty to be put on the head of Avs forward Steve Moore before a game in 2003. Todd Bertuzzi broke Moore's neck. May's offseason signing with the Avalanche was not greeted warmly by fans. They booed him every time he touched the puck early, but cheered him after the hit, which only drew a two-minute, unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty.

"The hit on Norstrom was terrible," Belanger said. "That was a hit from behind and May should be suspended for that. They really (messed) that up."

Notes: The Avalanche played without Fs Dan Hinote (back spasms) and Milan Hejduk (knee). Hejduk has missed all seven games, but is expected to return soon. ... With his goal, Avery extended his scoring streak to four games.

My Dear RL,

You fail to see the big picture. We have built a team with heart. A heart that does not allow them to bully teams as we have done for many years. Our players are more concerned for the opposing teams feelings.

Imagine if they had continued to pour it on the Kings. What would have been gained...............a W! No.......this goes much deeper, it is about respect of your fellow man. Caring about the feelings of those you would dominate.

Adam Foote was a perfect example of the Avalanche bullies from the past. GONE and good riddance.

Forsberg, the thug........GONE........see ya tough guy.

I cannot tell you how warm it made me feel to see our boys stop the bloodletting and hand the game back to the Kings.

Choke? I think not. It was a very well scripted gift to not only the KINGS, but to mankind.

Looks like you a bit premature with that avatar, S. Do you have a problem generally with being premature?

Associated Press

11/20/2005 1:31:33 AM

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Pavol Demitra showed the Colorado Avalanche why he leads the NHL's Western Conference in points - not that they needed another reminder.

Demitra scored the go-ahead goal on a power play with 3:32 remaining to complete his fourth career hat trick, leading the Los Angeles Kings to a 4-3 victory Saturday night. Demitra has 10 goals and 23 points in 26 career regular-season games against the Avalanche, including two goals in a come-from-behind 5-4 victory at Colorado on Oct. 19.

Pierre Turgeon scored twice for Colorado and set up a power-play goal by Alex Tanguay. But Turgeon received a penalty for elbowing Lubomir Visnovsky and it led to the winning goal - bringing a cascade of souvenir hats onto the ice.

"I asked for a couple, and I never got one," Demitra said. "But I think they gave them to charity, and that's a great thing to do."

"We needed a save there," Colorado coach Joel Quenneville said.

It was Demitra's first hat trick for the Kings and it followed a seven-game goal drought for the three-time all-star, who signed a three-year, $13.5 million US contract with them in August after seven-plus seasons with the St. Louis Blues.

Sean Avery also scored for the Kings and Mathieu Garon made 34 saves.

Demitra put the Kings ahead 3-2 with 14:48 left in the third period, a second after the Avalanche finished killing a cross-checking penalty against rookie Marek Svatos. Demitra attempted a pass for Craig Conroy that deflected off the skate of Colorado defenceman Patrice Brisebois and went between Aebischer's pads. Turgeon got the equalizer with 10:13 left in regulation, his seventh goal this season.

"The last two periods they were really coming strong at us, but we managed to stay focused," Garon said.

Turgeon tied it 2-2 at 15:19 of the second period, jumping on a loose puck and scoring into a wide-open net after Karlis Skrastins' cross-ice pass in front of the crease struck teammate Andrew Brunette in the back.

Los Angeles was killing a hooking penalty to Avery when Kings defenceman Tim Gleason broke up a pass in the Colorado zone and sent Demitra on a breakaway while falling forward. Demitra put a couple of moves on Aebischer before sliding the puck between the goalie's pads at 12:12 of the first period for his sixth career short-handed goal.

Avery put Los Angeles ahead 2-1, backhanding his own rebound past Aebischer's glove jut 51 seconds before the first intermission. Aebischer, making his first start in three games after surrendering eight goals on 30 shots during his previous two starts, was still upset about the late goal at the end of the period and slammed his stick against the boards as the teams headed for the dressing room.

"Not much to say. In the end, it doesn't matter how you win or lose the game. It's if you win or lose," Aebischer said. "I know I can play better."

Colorado forward Ian Laperriere, who scored 61 goals in eight-plus seasons with Los Angeles and was a crowd favourite because of his pugilistic exploits, played his first game at Staples Center since leaving the Kings for free agency in July. He was welcomed back with a video tribute on the scoreboard during the first period.

"It was special. It was a classy move by the Kings," Laperriere said. "They didn't have to do that, but they did. They've been booing Rob Blake for the last five years, so I didn't know what to expect."

Notes: Turgeon, who has 503 career goals, was the first overall selection in the 1987 entry draft. The only No. 1 overall picks who have scored more goals than Turgeon since the draft was established in 1963 are Mario Lemieux (683), Guy Lafleur (560), Dale Hawerchuk (518) and Gilbert Perreault (512). ... Demitra and Turgeon were teammates with St. Louis for four full seasons. ... Four different players have had hat tricks for the Kings this season, including Visnovsky, Craig Conroy and Alexander Frolov. ... Kings captain Mattias Norstrom, who came to the Kings with Laperriere in a trade that sent Jari Kurri and Marty McSorley to the New York Rangers in March 1996, is two games away from tying Rob Blake's franchise record of 662 games played by a defenceman. Blake was traded by the Kings to Colorado in February 2001.

I am going to give you some discretion. The first one is the one I want you to use, but I recognize that it arguably may not qualify as a "team logo" even though the team is using it extensively this year. If that is your view, you may use the second one. Enjoy!
