I requested and received permission to post this here.

Sunday I had to put down my best friend. His name was Tango.

He was a retired K9 and he never let me down. Never in 14 years.

He was a warrior too. In his role and in his way.

And I am honored to be allowed to put his name in this forum.

Sorry for your loss, it is one of the most difficult things you will ever have to do. They become family, only better.

I shall lift a glass to Tango this evening.

Sorry to hear of his passing away. If where he's headed is judged in any manner from his past, your words tell of a good place. In such arms as portrayed, looking so comfortable as he does in that picture, I am confidant he loved his home, and you.

It's a hard thing to have to do, but I think helping a loyal friend like Tango leave this world peacefully and with dignity is the truest sign of friendship there is-- here's to you Tango. Sorry for your loss Michelle.

Michelle,

I am very sorry to hear this about Tango. I have a 15 year old Siberian Husky whose name is Thor that doesn't get around very well and has some trouble sitting. We have him on pain meds and we do the best we can at taking care of him

I know that we're going to have a very tough decision to make in the future. I have thought about this a lot lately. Do I take him to the vet by myself or bring the family? Do I tell them what I'm doing or just do it? I'm not trying to be selfish or cold, just thinking about how I can spare my family the heartache of the loss of a family member. I guess there's no easy way out.

I'm just thinking out loud. They should be there to say their final goodbyes. They are entitled to that and I shouldn't take it away from them.

My heart goes out to you and Tango.

A difficult and heartwrenching situation, sorry to hear this Doc. There is no easy answer though. Speaking from experience, somehow it's a little less painful when you can say goodbye...

BTDT. Had a red/white Siberian named Czar. No matter how sick he was, he would never let me outpace him on our runs. He always had to be the lead dog.

RIP Tango

...I have thought about this a lot lately. Do I take him to the vet by myself or bring the family?...

We also had to put our oldest dog to sleep a few weeks back. I got Casey, a chow mix, right before my wife and I got married. She was there when all the girls came home from the hospital and was a regular fixture in our home during all our moves and the kids growing up.

At 15 she slowed way down and had to go on pain medication. The last 6 months she couldn't stand by herself and had to be carried outside. Once there she could walk around on her own.

We talked with all the kids about putting her to sleep and they could see her quality of life was getting poor. By the time we were ready to take the last trip to the Vet the kids were prepared. It was a sad last night with a few tears from the girls and everybody gave Casey a hug and a pat in the morning. My wife and I took her to the Vet and she was gone when the kids came home from school. That way worked well for our family.

She was a little over 17 when we put her to sleep. Old for a chow. She had a good life and I'm sure her days are now spent chasing rabbits and cats.

Thor passed away last night after 15 years of giving love and affection to his family. I stayed with him throughout the entire procedure at the Vet's Office.

Thor's ashes will be placed in an Urn and kept with our family.

We love and miss you Thor.

Doc,

It doesn't get any easier on us, regardless of our age. In my teens, a beloved pet died in my arms and then a few years ago, I did as you did with Thor, and stayed throughout the procedure with the Vet. I cried just as many tears as an adult.

If I may pass along a personal experience re: keeping Thor's ashes. A couple years ago, my older brother and his wife asked if I would come stay at their house, in another state, for a week while they went away on vacation. I knew it would be just as much of a vacation for me because they live in the sunny South. Since the last time I had been there, they had to put down both of their Yorkies, dearly loved by everyone.
After I was there a day or 2, I decided to dust, and as I was dusting the shelves I thought how nice it was that my sister-in-law had found two statues of Yorkies and had a brass plate engraved with each dog's name put on the base. As I moved the first statue to dust around it, I tried to lift it by the top of the statue. Yes, I am sure you have guessed - these were the 'urns' with the ashes of Chip and Dale. Thankfully, I didn't break it, dump it and lose one of them. It was such a close call. I'm never going to dust that shelf if I stay there and 'housesit' again !

My thoughts are with you and your family, Doc. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Sincerely,
Roycroft201

Oh Doc! I just saw this! I am so sorry. 15 is a wonderfully long life, but not nearly long enough for a best friend.

I am glad you will keep him with the family. I too bought an urn and made a special spot in the house for Tango.

RIP Thor

I have had a harder time with losing a dog than I do most people. The unconditional loyalty and love I think embeds itself pretty deeply into your heart.

Again Doc, I am terribly sorry for your loss, and Pete, my belated-condolances to you as well regarding Casey.
