View Full Version : Trip to Fort Bragg

Took a trip to Fort Bragg last week to see my son. The wife and I were there at SOAF Saturday night as he returned from Phase II. He jumped out of the truck disheveled, dirty, and a weeks growth of beard.......he looked great! He started the 18E course the following Monday.

Now for some musings and observations:

1. Smith Lake has a great MWR recreation area. One room cabins @ $25 a night with new shower facilities within yards. Camping sites at $15 a night with full hook ups. Currently under construction....2BR log cabins with indoor plumbing for $75 a night. Consider that it costs around $75 a night in hotels.

2. Stayed at the Airborne Inn @ $45 a night. Nice place and nice staff. Former SF from the 10th was working the desk. Bent over backwards to accomodate us.

3. The allotted uniform allowance does not come close to meeting the needs of our young soldiers. I'm trying to figure how I can get a tax deduction for supplementing, on a regular basis, that allowance.

4. Went searching for Desert Boots that are required, as stated by 18E cadre. $150 new. Found some new ones at a pawn shop for $60. They had an excellent selection and supply of them. Got me to wondering (always the cynical cop) where those boots come from. Hmmmmmmm. They certainly had new issue everything at half the cost.

5. Met some more of my sons friends in the pipeline. Ladies and Gentlemen.....Our country is in good hands. My son and 6 of his friends drove up to Washington to run the ARMY 10 Miler today! Gluttons for punishment.

6. Businesses are quick to offer discounts to cops..........why the hell don't they give that discount to the troops. Seems to me that the engine that drives Fayetteville's economy is Fort Bragg personnel. I witnessed more attempts to take advantage of the soldiers than to give them breaks. The ever present "We support our Troops" on marquees should read; "Our troops support us."

7. Comparing Fort Benning to Fort Bragg..........alot of effort goes into keeping Fort Bragg beautiful.

8. Both times I was at Fort Bragg this year the JFK special forces museum was closed!

9. The Airborne and Special Ops museum just keeps getting better!

10. There were collection boxes throughout the post for hurricane victims.

11. The E7s thru E9's have gotten alot younger from when I was in. When I was in they were all in their 70's (I thought)!

12. They sent a bunch of guys that were in the pipeline to E5 boards, as long as they met the 18 mo TIS and 4 mos TIG. So in theory an 18X could be promoted to E5 before he graduates. That is if he had the 4 yr college degree when he enlisted.

13. Everywhere I went people were calling me sir. That's an outrage!

14. Wilmington is a beautiful city!

Okay just some ramblings about my trip. Much more but this will have to suffice.

He'll get more uniforms, SF replaces torn up uniforms for their soldiers.

Welcome to Fayettenam! Home of the drive by-shootings and everyone wants to make a buck from the soldiers.

I've been to hundreds of cities all over the world but none compare to fayetteville NC. I've got absolutely nothing good to say concerning that place, nothing.

glad you had a good trip!

LOL. I laugh because it's true. Young soldiers usually love to spend their money and the townsfolk are eager to take it. Cars, alcohol, and women: economy drivers.

1. Regarding the MWR items, I attended the AUSA luncheon where the guest speaker was our acting garrison cdr (also very involved in specops.) He assured us that the entire post was going to be renovated, in order of importance. Also, they're planning to add a water park! I'm not sure if they ever decided on it or not, but they were kicking around the idea of making like a small amusement park.

3. Your resident POG finance guy (that's me) is happy to inform you that the clothing allowance rates are being raised effective today, Oct 01. This is the start of the new fiscal year. IMO, it is still too low, but a step in the right direction. I don't have the new rates on me since I'm not in the office at the moment, but I'll try to post them for you Monday.

4. I tend to agree with the cynical cop in you, and I am confident that kleptomania will run even wilder with the new ACU's, where the name tapes and unit patches are easily removed, since they are attached with velcro.

Haircuts, sewing, and boot shining are big "industries" in Fayetteville. I wonder what will happen with the introduction of the ACU and the new boots.

Soldiers will still need the bootman for class a events, but his business will be greatly reduced. I hope they don't jack their rates up to compensate. But I can shine my own boots and cut my own hair (my hairline is way too receded to worry about high and tights or hairstyles, so I crew cut all the way  )

I'm sure anyone who's industrious enough can find some kind of void and fill it. I remember back in South Florida many years ago there was a big flap about girls running hot dog stands down by the beach wearing only g-strings and pasties. I used to kid about my retirement plan of running a fleet of gut trucks operated by scantily clad hotties. I bet some soldiers fresh back from the sandbox after a hard day on the range would wind up buying a lousy microwave sandwich for like 10 bucks if they could stare at some mile-long legs.....

but no I don't want to gouge prices or anything. I've spent too much money to cleaners and bootmen and supply shops, so I understand.

I think retirees will keep the place afloat. To tell the truth, I would have never gone downtown in 1965 if it wasn't for Freddie Lorenzen & LaFayette Ford. I was hooked. Later, I lived at 1419 General Lee Ave. Haymount was a nice area for a snuffy & bride. No honest to God trooper would let anyone except his wife shine his boots. No honest to God trooper would ever let his wife do his fatigues. Damn, we did have some fun on Bragg Blvd. & Myrtle Beach.

I saw the figure of $4.8 million raised by the MWR for rec facilities. Not sure what the time line was on that figure, but if that is annual......there should be plenty of funds to even meet those low priority projects.

Smart ARS! Now cut me a check reimbursing my expenses!

CoLawman: I could think of some very, very not-PC answers to that question. :D

However, females have to get more items for their Class A's. They have to get the slacks and the skirts. Therefore, they need the jump boots and the pumps, etc.
