Well here I am in Asscrackistan for the second time (JUL 03-FEB04). I have been here now four months and although I have seen progress, the Afghans still are the same society. I tell myself everyday, "I am here so that my kids donīt have to 20 years from now". The elections had a 50% turnout. A few minor attacks here and there, but a decent result. The counting phase has started and that may not end for another few weeks.
These people have a long way to go before they can run a lemonade stand on their own, much less a stable islamic democracy. Lots of nepotism and corruption. I just hope that with western input and assistance this young govīt can thrive. I wouldnīt put GoA into the walk phase just yet. Too all those on your way here listen to the vets and vets pass on your knowledge about this place.
This country is such a dichotomy. Cell phones, satellite tv in some places and most people walk everywhere, donkeys are the main log support and roads that arenīt much better than donkey trails. Most of the peasants still live in one room mud huts.
The army and police are not well equiped and have no concept of MDMP. We will be here for awhile longer.
