Military May play a Bigger Role in Relief Efforts

As with all things there are good things about it and bad things about it. It could also get ugly.

It sounds good on paper but what about "Mission Creep". Response goes from "Major" to "Minor" to "Not so bad at all" to every day. How about filling jobs during a major labor strike? Give a politician an opening and he'll run 20 miles with stuff you never planned on.

Politically? You might like it with your guy in charge but what if the worst slime ball from the "other" side gets into power and can use the military? That is something to think on.

Could the politicians expand the "meals on wheels" activities to the point that they are so badly needed in the states that they have no time to do their job OCONUS? "Congressman, we need to pull the troops from your district who are helping get in the sugar crop. We need to send them to a hot spot overseas." "Like Hell you are, I'll see the president (D)!"

Just a few things to think about.

Thing 1 and Thing 2 were holding the blue "Support Our Troops" banner on the front page of the Fayetteville newspaper Saturday. Alas, I was far too ugly as I was not shown in any of the pictures.

I have no problem with the military assisting in disaster relief but not as an additional mission or a stated capability. If anything it should fall under collateral activities when everything else has failed, will fail, or is obviously outside the ability of the states to handle. Once you write this into the military mission profile you are talking training requirements that will detract from other training, equipment, personnel, etc, etc, etc. If they really want to do this thing right the first time then lets break out of this one Army crap. Give the AD and Reserves the warfighting missions and retool the guard back into the homeland defense mission and response to state and national natural disasters. That will require building a force to meet the stated national security objectives, resourcing it, training it, and all the other bells and whistles that go with it. That also means that we take out of the guard the combat missions and build a credible reserve to do those missions, turn the national guard units (like the 19th and the 20th) into reserve units. Just my opinion.

I do not want the Active Army involved in LE.

Killing American citizens is not what we are about, unless there is an insurrection.

I remember the outcry over the fact that the Army MIGHT have been peripherally involved at Waco.

Can you imagine if we had been ordered to participate in the final assault there?

You want to hear something shitty, the states are paying out of their own accounts for the National Guard to help support Katrina Relief. The National Guard takes care of everything inside the borders of the US, however now days we are expected to take care of business both inside and outside. But the bank will break, its just a matter of time...

So what you're saying is that those NG units being sent in support of Katrina relief under Title 32 (state control) orders are being paid for by the states, rather than the federal government? Shocking. :rolleyes: If those units aren't being sent under Title 10, then you're damned skippy the states are paying for it; they're under state, not under federal control. Consider it a donation to the cause by those states (CO included) that are sending help out of the kindness of their hearts (not to mention the good press they get for being 'helpful', and political leverage for use down the road).
