View Full Version : Stitches
I was pulling out some stitches that I had in my leg this morning, and I accidentally cut both sides of the knot, and left the rest of the thread in my leg. Other then showing my dumbassness, will there be any side affects?
Thanks

Yes. Your rectum will begin to hurt and you will have problems defecating soon.

Those will be the signs and symptoms I predict you will suffer when your Team medic finds out what you did and has to fix it.
If you need help getting his boot out of your ass, get the demo guy to use a miniscule amount of C4.
What kind of sutures did they use?

Why in the hell, didn't you just go to your Team Medic?
I will assume that since they were skin sutures and you could see them to cut the knot they were permanent, like nylon, prolene or silk...
were they black or blue in color?
If that is the case, they will do one of three things...
1. work their way to the surface and you will once again see them and be able to take them out
2. your body will seal them off as foreign bodies and form a little purulent pocket (stitch abscess)...more common if silk was used so probably not the case here.
3. your body will seal them off and you will never know you lost the stuff under the surface of your skin except if you can feel the suture.
even non absorbable suture eventually gets broken down....
you are in the company of many an intern...only they usually don't tell.

for picking up my slack...please consider me heavily medicated for the next few weeks...
Looks like MaxTab should get "stitch boy" under has name for a bit...:D
1...never do something yourself that a medic was trained to do...the few times we get to actually DO some medicine, we really enjoy it!
2. If you want to do some medic stuff..always do it on someone else.
3. DocT hit it square with the "intern suture removal"...if you should develop a zit over the site...go see you medic, he gets to work. otherwise...
next team party after a few brewhaha's I forseee in my crystal computer the followinf phrase...
"You still got that stitch stuff in there...hell, you don't need no medics,I can get it out no sweat...sumbody go and get my gun tools"...drunkest 18B present

as he is the only witness to his stupidity that would be rather harsh, wouldn't you say?
but then again, he wouldn't have to worry about stitch abscesses then.....

AaHa! But he never said he was alone. And based on my past experience, I can't believe he would attempt to do that without saying "Hey man, watch this! I don't need Doc, I'll just do it myself!".
LOL - come clean MaxTab
Actually I tried to get my wife to do it, but seeing as she's pregnant, and any little things, makes her want to hurl she refused to do it. So I was like, "hey, if an 18D can do it, it can't be that hard" and proceeded to use my gerber tool, scissors to cut it, and some tweezers from the medicine cabinet, to pull. Got 3 of them out alright. :D
Oh and the stitches were black in color.

If I only had a dollar for every time...
They were probably synthetic. Watch for s&s of infection as per the two Doc's instructions above. If you even suspect, go to your Team Doc asap.
And we want pics for the med board please.
Oh, and next time...
scissors ? I had mine taken out with a knife. Of course, this is after I let hubby cut my leg open not once, oh no, dumbass me let him do it twice...lol
He did a nice job stitching me up though. I've just learned not to let a bored Ranger medic near a scalpel when I have cyst in my leg (still there too)...

I normally use nail clippers to cut them as close to the skin as possible and have had no such troubles.
You might want to make sure you are pulling on the right ends with the tweezers, though.:D

EXACTLY what I was thinking NDD.
Yeah, he hit my shin bone and I made him stop. Nothing like the pain of a bone being hit with a metal forcep.
If it starts to bother me more, I'll have it removed one way or another, but it's shifted and seems a little smaller now. The scar is pretty small too.

I did have an oral surgeon leave some in after having my impacted Wisdom teeth extracted.
Abcessed after a week or two and they had to be dug out.

Most of the time I use chromic gut sutures in the mouth. Will last 5-7 days and then dissolve. They make for nasty scars if used where the wound can be seen though because they cause a little more inflammation than other types of sutures. :( Perfect for wisdom teeth though.

Fess up Sir. He left them or you didn't want to go back to the "pain cave" again so you skipped your 1 week post-op visit? LOL

Set the stage here. Saigon RVN, Red Cross Day Center not far from House 10 (the SOG Safe House). I'm down there headed out of country on a Stand-Down. We go in and I ask the Candy-Striper if she has a pair of "Nail-Clippers", she says yes, hands them to me and I clip the sutures on my hand and remove them. All is well untill she comes over to see what I am doing and she FAINTS !!! OUT COLD !!!
Talk about blowing one's cover !!! I di-di'd post haste and got clear of the area. !!! LOL :D

I did use that stupid little winky thing ( ;) )and a laugh out loud(LOL). I was playing ( I guess a litttle to rough. Sorry 24601)
She should know if I didn't like her I would have simply ignored her or sent her a PM telling her that she should always pick her sutures and preferably poke into the socket with sharp knives and dirty toothpicks after every meal. After all, we know those are the best things to do after surgery. LOL

It was the pieces of dead flesh that I was really picking at. The stitches came out more by accident.
No urge to be a doc btw, I like being a medic. Now, to just get my license in the state I'll be moving to.

Wasn't flaming you 24601. I hadn't read you profile and did not know you were a medic. Wouldn't have called you a wanna-be doc. I would have changed that to calling you a CRAZY FRIGGIN MEDIC!! LOL :p I owe you a beer... or is it wine my lady?
BTW- you were probably not picking at a piece of necrotic tissue... it was probably the blood clot that had hardened on the top edge exposed in your mouth. If you had gotten it out to soon, you would have experienced the great wonder of PAIN called a dry socket. OUCH

You must practice dentistry for the military.
I went back for the one week appointment, he removed all of the sutures from three of the sockets, left one or two in the last one.
I noticed the inflammation, then saw the black thread with a mirror. Thought about removing them myself, and decided that I could make things worse by messing with them myself.
He seemed pretty unconcerned about his error when I came back in a couple of weeks later for him to fix it.
Where are the ambulance chasers when you need one?

the next question is were they soft like thread or stiffer and plastic like....
soft/threadlike is silk... they will abscess
stiffer/plastic is nylon...less chance of a problem
good luck... where were the stitches (or I guess where are they remaining)?
I have em in my leg, it is thread like, black stiches.
if it is, in fact, silk it is a braided suture which makes bacterial infection more likely than if it had been nylon. Bacteria get into the little interstices as the suture is actually made up of many many different threads.
You will probably wind up with a small abscess or you may notice a suture reaction with a "pimple' like looking area that drains.
If you are lucky even though it sounds like silk it will really have been nylon as its rare anyone closes anything with silk anymore because it causes much more of a reaction.
