USC REPORT
No Alcohol Sales Inside Coliseum
By Gary Klein, Times Staff Writer

An agreement not to sell alcoholic beverages inside the Coliseum during USC home games has been finalized, the general manager of the stadium said Tuesday.

The top-ranked Trojans play their home opener Saturday against Arkansas.

"We're all set," Pat Lynch said. "We will not be serving."

USC President Steven Sample announced in June that the sale and possession of beer or other alcoholic beverages would no longer be allowed because of increased surliness, foul language and other behavior that was harming the atmosphere.

Bernard C. Parks, a Los Angeles city councilman and a member of the Coliseum Commission, said at the time that the commission was not opposed to the plan, under one condition: "That the Coliseum be made whole as it relates to the revenue loss."

On Tuesday, Lynch would not specify when the agreement had been reached.

"Recently," he said.

Lynch said no formal document was in place and said that no specific dollar figure had been agreed upon, "but we have an understanding on all issues."

Meanwhile, USC announced that Aramark, a concession company, would sell beer provided by one of the school's corporate sponsors outside the stadium.

Jose Eskenazi, an associate athletic director, said the setup was similar to those at several Pacific 10 Conference stadiums where beer is not sold inside.

The temporary facility will be located near the intersection of Figueroa and 39th streets and will accommodate nearly 1,000 people, Eskenazi said. It will be open three hours before game-time and close before kickoff.

Asked if selling beer outside the stadium was at odds with the university's request to ban alcohol sales inside, Eskenazi said: "What we're doing is not outside the norm."

USC, which set attendance records the last two seasons, was the only Pac-10 school — and one of only a few nationally — that allowed the sale of alcoholic beverages inside the stadium at home games. Several Pac-10 schools allow alcohol to be sold in buildings near their stadiums.

Typical California move - not worried about the people - just the ozone.

I for one applaud the move, as anything that keeps you from painting your face and doing the "wave", all while shirtless in a thong is a good thing.

Only the south would name their team "The Game Cocks!" And you're right they are cocks! But they are playing much better now than in the past. I watched them all season last year. As long as they beat Georgia and GTU.

And you should have expected the Trojans to not sell alcohol in LA, it's California man!

And I guess used rubbers are fitting mascots for a California team.

BTW: Born and raised in Bakersfield and was an ardent USC fan. I went to a coupla SC/ UCLA games. The fights were better than the games. :munchin Howsumever I moved and ain't never goin back y'all. :lifter

OK, maybe Arkansas sucks. I was there, and I can attest that it was a highly entertaining game.

And Notre Dame loses at home to an unranked team . . . ::choking noise:: LOL

I was at Ft Gordon having a bier w/ a bunch of 2nd Leftenants outside Ring Hall. One of them was wearing a Souch Carolina Game Cocks hat and he saw my OSU Beavers hat, walked up to me and said "Wouldn't it be cool if the Cocks and Beavers played against each other on TV?" I just stood there and started laughing...

This is how I predict the PAC-10 will finish this year: :munchin

1.USC
2.Arizona State
3.CAL
4.UCLA
5.Oregon
6.Oregon State
7.Stanford
8.Arizona
9.Washington State
10.Washington

Things to consider; UCLA, CAL, & ASU are all contenders for 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in the PAC, but I think the rest of the standings will stay as is. Unless for some uncertain a team has a surge, which is possible in the PAC, could change the standings.

Ah yes...I remember when I transfered to South Carolina. I drove from Seattle to San Diego to Charleston in four days. Upon arriving in South Carolina, I noticed a lot of nice looking young women driving vehicles sporting the "! 'heart' COCKS" bumber stickers, and thought "I'm gonna love this place". I was somewhat disappointed when I discovered it refered to a football team.

Schutze74

Very true Weazle23 about the Apple Cup, but have you heard the scandals that are rocking OSU lately? Latest one is 3 football players supplying booze to an 18 yr old freshman who died w/ a .048 or 4 times the normal Blood Alcohol Level. Two are freshman players and one is a Junior. And there's plenty more that came out last year too. When I played ball there, we had our own problems, but nothing to this extent and everything was dealt w/ in-house. Riley is an idiot and I'd like to be the first person to egg the shit out of him as a former player and Alumni!

But keep in mind one of the oldest rivalry's in the US is Oregon vs OSU, dates back to 1868 as the first recorded game.

Gazette Times, Corvallis Oregon 5Nov05

 "Oregon State University football player Greggory Daniel Peat appeared in Benton County Circuit Court Tuesday on two counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor.

The minors referred to in the charges include Lance Strickland, 18, of Joseph, who died in a campus dorm room on Sept. 3 after drinking too much whiskey, and another man from Joseph, Clayton Hayward, then 18.

Peat, 17 at the time of the incident, is the last of three Beavers teammates to be arraigned on related charges. Fellow freshman redshirt Michael Marks, 18, was arraigned Monday on two counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor, and John Christian Ronnfeldt, 21, was arraigned Monday on four counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor.

Ronnfeldt allegedly bought whiskey at a Corvallis liquor store for Marks and Peat, who then shared it with Strickland and Hayward as they partied in OSU Finley Hall, said Benton County District Attorney Scott Heiser.

Strickland was reportedly visiting Marks, also of Joseph, and had planned to go to the Sept. 3 Beavers home game. He was found dead in an an unoccupied room in Finley Hall late that morning before the game.

Ronnfeldt, Marks and Peat will be disciplined under the new OSU athletics disciplinary code, according to school officials. After their cases are resolved through the legal system, they must attend alcohol awareness classes and do community service, even if they are found innocent.

They will not be suspended from any games, since they were not expected to play this season.

Following his death, Strickland's blood-alcohol content was .43 percent. His death is attributed to either having a fatal level of alcohol in the blood — known as alcohol poisoning — or having aspirated on vomit, or both, Heiser said.

Ronnfeldt, Marks and Peat are scheduled to appear for pretrial hearings in Benton County Circuit Court on Nov. 3."

I have been to

South Bend (Notre Dame)
Columbus (Ohio State)
Ann Arbor (Michigan) and
Las Vegas (UNLV)

Never have I been to a college stadium that ever served alcohol. But when ND gets done with USC on Saturday those Trojan fairweather fans are gonna down some serious Bloody Mary's to keep up with the hangover the Irish is going to lay on them.

Don't get me wrong RL, your team is of the hook, but if ASU can expose weakness, let me tell you that Charlie will not wait until halftime to expose it.

Should be a great game.

I like Charlie Weiss, but Notre Dame doesn't have the quality players to beat USC. However, ND would probably win if USC's 4th string were to start...

The difference is that the Los Angelus Collesium is not the property of USC. USC has no stadium even though the campus is across the street. At various times the L.A. Dodgers, L.A. Rams, and two olympics have been held at the Collesium.. Note the article states that USC has reached an agreement with the owners of the Collesium.

Put down whatever you are smoking. I am a homer for ND, but you don't know jack if you think USC is that much better than ND that they could play 4th string.
USC is not that much better, don't kid yourself.

Coach Weis recognizes three things:

1) ND Def L vs USC OL - This drives their offense

2) They have three outstanding RB/KR/PR

3) The defense is led by thier DL and LB and S - right down the middle, which is typical Pete Carroll. The man is solid on D

And what is the strength of ND? QB, OL, LB, DL, Special Teams. (And RB -Walker, TE- Fasano, WR-Smarjdaza, aren't to bad either, man)

USC is lucky to leave South Bend with a Victory.

For the IRISH to win we need to do one of two things:

1- cover the WR's, limit the running game on first and second down, force them into obvious passing downs, and cover 5 people with 7 defensive backs.

or........

2- outscore the sonofabitches.

WAKE UP THE ECHOES!

GO IRISH!!!

I'm smoking reality, what are you smoking?! That's why USC is the best, becuase they are the most well rounded and dangerous team in the nation. Why do you think they have 2 national championships! Pete Carrol took good players and made them the best w/ his inovative coaching. His players are good, but it's good coaching that has produced the championships.

Charlie Weiss is also a very talented coach and I think ND will be a definate contender in the future, but not this year.

What makes USC good this year is there ability to understand thier weaknesses and turn them around and win. The PAC-10 is stronger this year than most other conferences in the Nation and challenges like that always produce winners. It will be a close game, but USC will still pull it off!

cal, uscla and arizona state are in the top 20. ND is in the top 20. I think there schedule be above average. Also, they have not lost in what, 24 games?

I think they will be okay with the BCS.

How is ND's defensive backfield? Can they tackle?

Both defensive backfields are lacking. The key here is keeping them from their typical 13 possesions and 50 points. Ball control.

Nobody can cover Reggie. Can Reggie get his touches if he isn't on the field?

I'd like to see the SEC play some of the PAC-10 teams like Cal, USC, UCLA Oregon, ASU or OSU. USC has had a way tougher schedule than Texas and USC has had and usually has one of the toughest schedules in the US.

A guy I work with went a group of guys to the Purdue/Minnesota game a few weeks ago, in Minnesota. After the game they hit a few titty bars, that got boring and expensive. So they decided to pick up a couple of cases of beer and head back to their hotel room to play some poker. There was one glitch, ALL of the liquor stores around there close at 10PM. Moral of the story, pack your own cooler.
