I'm at a loss for which carrier it was I saw footage of, however they showed one heading for the Gulf of Mexico on the news last night. I have never seen a ship that big move that fast. The bow wave was 3/4 of the way to the flight deck and the rooster tail was the length of the ship. For those of you non-amphibious / full-time sea critters, if this were a car, the speedometer would read "Holy Crap!!!"

I participated in the evactuation of foreign civilians from Manila in 89, you can really load those Flight Decks and Hanger Decks (and Well Decks if you've got an LHA or LPH) when you take out the fixed wing aircraft and gunships.

Godspeed the rescuers and safe passage.

A buddy of mine commanded the HST carrier battle group. When I asked him how fast the Truman was, he said that it was pretty impressive.

Probably still not as fast as the Enterprise with its eight reactors.

The top speed is classified, but it's a lot faster than most of her escort ships can sail. Enterprise has 20,000 more Shaft Horsepower than any of the Nimitz classes (280,000 -vs- 260,000).

As an aside, they just started construction of the next class of CVN's on August 11. The as yet un-named CVN-78 will be bigger, faster, and require fewer Unreps than a Nimitz Class, but have a smaller crew.

My son who is in the 82nd called on Sunday. Said they patrolled the French Quarter on Saturday night and it was pretty quiet. Have not heard anything since. He also said he was the designated spokesman for his squad. That could set live news broadcasts back a decade or so.

Just heard last night from my son. Said they spent the last few days traveling around in Zodiac boats and pulling people out of houses. Said they pulled out around 50 yesterday and around 10 dogs.

Said having to go by dogs on porches barking at them is probably the toughest part.

My son said they had to pull an elderly gentleman from his house. This man was a diabetic who had not had his medicine for a couple of days, and he weighed around 250 pounds. As they were lifting him over the parapet and into the boat, his shorts came off and my son said he got a face full of old man ass.

I'm not sure if there is a medal for that and if so, whether or not I want to see it. lol
