There is quite a bit of doubt over Pershing's actions in the PI. None of the biogrophies done on him have ever been able to substantiate the story. His private papers and that of men who served under him never mentioned the incident. In fact most accounts of Blackjack's time in the PI show that he went out of his way to avoid killing the locals. If it were true it would contradict most historical accounts of the man himself. Personally, I don't think he did it. There is nothing that i have found in the various historical records that would suggest that he would summarily execute prisoners.

Laclede is in Missouri, not Mississippi.
As rubberneck notes, there is no evidence to corroborate the content of this clipping. It does not accord with Pershing's character and behavior, as chronicled by various biographers, though I suppose they're all lying and the author of this clipping has the truth.
Pershing's strategy in the Philippines involved understanding the locals and the enemy (he read the Qur'an and learned to speak Moro), and figuring out how to separate the enemy from the locals, i.e. classic counterguerrilla strategy. He won over local religious and tribal leaders while aggressively pursuing guerrilla forces. Taking actions that would seem designed to inflame Muslims does not accord with this strategy.
Somehow I think if Pershing were around today, he would be pursuing the kind of strategy we are pursuing in Afghanistan, and the kind of people invoking him in this clipping would be denouncing him as soft. Then they'd search for someone else to invoke.

I believe the Pershing that existed then would be stunned by the thinking of today. I believe he'd be more likely to take a good look at the present, resign his commision and buy a farm as far way away from anyone as he could. Unless he had access to a number of his own past officers and staff, then he might stick around to see what could be done.

I have said since 9-11 that when they catch Bin Laden they should duct tape him to a live hog and drop him in a chipper shredder on live tv!
I am sure one of their leaders will find a passage in the Koran to say they still went to heaven though, as they seem to find one to support anything they wish to do.
True or not, it makes for good reading and good ideas...
People like to talk all the time about PSYOPS.
That's PSYOPS done right!!!
