By SGT Joe Healy
U.S. Army Special Operations Command

CALGARY, Alberta (USASOC News Service, Aug. 15, 2005) — A U.S. Army Special Forces non-commissioned officer received the First Special Service Force Frederick Award during a formal ceremony here Aug. 13.

Master Sgt. Sarun Sar, a team sergeant assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) received the award for his outstanding achievements while deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

“It is an honor to receive this award,” Sar said.

Sar, a native the Kom Puong Speir Province, Cambodai, demonstrated uncommon valor and dedication to the mission and his men. Sar’s unit conducted over 350 combat patrols, and assisted and advised 150 Soldiers of the Afghan Security Force and 200 Afghan National Army Soldiers.

The Frederick award is presented by the First Special Service Force to a Special Forces Soldier that exhibited the highest degree of professionalism from November 19, 2005 to July 2, 2005. The FSSF was a one-of –a-kind joint Canadian and American unit that fought side-by-side during World War II. The unit saw considerable action in the Aleutians, France and Italy.

The award is named after Lt. Col. Robert T. Frederick, the first-ever commander of the FSSF.
