I'm not up on my soviet artillery. Does anybody here know how much bang one of these things packs? I had thought that it was a fairly sizable amount. I'm sure it would not have sunk one of the ships but I imagine it could make a hell of a hole, but I could be wrong.

122mm HE rocket for the BM-21 and variants is 9 feet long, weighs 66.8 kilograms (147.3 pounds), has a range of 20 km, and the warhead itself has about 40 lbs. net explosive weight.
It is not a pinpoint weapon though a flattop is not a small target, and was not an armor penetrating warhead, but 40 lbs, of HE hitting your vessel at a high rate of speed will get your attention.
The attack was effective for the terrorists regardless. Look at the ships pulling out of Jordan, the news coverage, and the comments by elected offifials.

I thought that they were Amphib-Assault Vessels !! And I concur, it would get your attention.

They are.
They also have flat decks and the Kearsarge has the following specs:
Length - 844 feet
Beam - 106 feet
Draft - 27 feet
Speed - 24+ knots
Displacement - 40,500 tons fully loaded
That would make it about the same size as a WW II Yorktown Class Fleet Carrier, but much heavier and slower:
Length: 827 feet
Beam: 114 feet
Draft: 28 feet
Speed: 34 knots
Displacement: 19,800 tons

The Kearsarge is about 1,000 tons lighter than the Charles de Gaulle. The Kuznetsov, at 67,000 tons, is the only other non-US aircraft carrier in the world larger than our LHAs.
The next largest is the Sao Paulo, formerly the Clemenceau, at 32,780 tons. The Sao Paulo, though smaller than the Kearsarge, is a true aircraft carrier and can launch non-V/STOL aircraft (specifically, the A-4 Skyhawks of VF-1, the 1º Esquadrão de Aviões de Interceptação e Ataque).
The Principe de Asturias, Spain's aircraft carrier, displaces just 16,917 tons. Italy's Andrea Doria will come in at 26,660 tons, but is still under construction. The Giuseppe Garibaldi is just 13,850 tons. Britain's Invincible class carriers displace 20,600 tons. India's Viraat, the former HMS Hermes, is 28,706 tons. Thailand's Chakri Nareubet is 11,300 tons.

Flatdecks=Nimitz Class to me.
Power Plant: Two nuclear reactors, four shafts
Length, overall: 1,092 feet (332.85 meters)
Flight Deck Width: 252 feet (76.8 meters)
Beam: 134 feet (40.84 meters)
Displacement: Approx. 97,000 tons (87,996.9 metric tons) full load
Speed: 30+ knots (34.5+ miles per hour)
This, would not be a small target.

Terrorism is designed to illicit a psychological response, is that what you're saying Boss? I do believe they are in our Loop on this one.
Takes balls to attack a GBGB.
