Instead of hijacking the Insurgency and Civil Wars thread:

Peregrino and all others, if you have more recommendations for books about US history, by all means, please share.

I have a rough timeline and understanding, but wouldn't mind more intimate knowledge about interesting bits of older times in general, the founding fathers and the civil war in specific. Not necessarily the most spectacular events, but rather what's essential, interesting and thought provoking (other versions of events, possible other courses of action, etc - of course not completely illusionary).

As to specific developments, battles, actions, aspects, and so on, I leave for you to recommend.

So, gentlemen, how was this country molded?

How deep do you want to go? If you want a fast over view, "Don't Know Much About History". Is a well written scan, with a good bibliography.
Then......
Gordon Wood, The American Revolution: A History
Eve Kornfeld, Creating an American Culture, 1775-1800
David McCullough, 1776.
A. E. D Howard ed., The United States Constitution: Roots, Rights, and Responsibilities.
Alexander Hamilton et al, The Federalist Papers
Shelby Foote's History of the Civil War. It's too bad he isn't the reader of the audio books. It is worth sitting through Ken Burns Civil War, if only for the opportunity to listen to Mr. Foote talk.

That should keep me busy for a while, thanks!
