When I was in, I used the regular old web gear with 4 mag pouches, 2 canteens, and 2 compass pouches.
In mine I carried:
6 mags, 1 canteen cup, 1 stove
r. handside compass pouch-compass
r. handside ammo pouch-minimag, motrin/meds
l. handside ammo pouch-leatherman, BFA, small bottle of CLP, lighter, small medic scissors, tripwire, heat tab, cammie stick, electrical tape,
l. handside compass pouch-2 field dressings, eng. tape, vs-17 piece and a s. mirror.
I had the earplugs in my r. canteen pocket and my water pur tabs in my left canteen pocket.
I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

These days for my gear I carry all the above in a RACK or other chest rig, plus
small e-trex gps
surefire 6z (replaces minimag)
strobe
radio
sometimes also a talkabout
flares
chemlights
additional med gear
550 cord
misc e&e gear-space blanket,trashbags,etc.
spare batteries
folding saw
I add or subtract med gear/survival gear depending on what I am doing.
I have my pistol in a dropleg and my SRK on my belt.
Sometimes I'll add my leatherman and my surefire to my belt depending on what I am doing.
Just wanted to hear what some of the other folks carry in their second line. Always looking for new ideas.

Ya, I know I should trim it down but I want to be able to sustain several days to a week if I have to survive on it.
25th ID, late 80s, we all had the same gear and all wore it the same way as per the Division CSM! ;)

1 E Tool in Carrier fixed to the center rear of the belt
1 Standard Mil angle head flashlight
I think if the CG let him he would have done away with the 60 and Saw gunners so we could all look the same.

Other then to go poop, I never used an etool while I was in the army.
Neither did we, but thats how it was in legland. Never use it, weighs a lot, but carry it all times anyway cause the CSM said so. In the 24th ID we kept them on our rucks, which stayed on the track. :D

Not much. Lots of Indians and what not out and about at night. I sleep in the morning after PT.

LOL - I dug a four man fighting position on a gravel location in about 30 seconds with my barehands the first time I hear them launch one at a drilling rig. There was natural gas leaking all over the place.:D

Here in Iraq, Im wearing an SDS RACK. I picked that one since it was Govt Issue. Heres what I carry on it:
6 Magazines (I was issued 210 rds basic load)
PVS14s with BII
3x attachement for the 14s
Mini Mag light
ICOM Radio Compass
2 field dressings
Sheath Knife
1qt Canteen
Case for Oakleys
Drop leg pouch for expended mags
Camelbak
We where issued the MOLLE FLC, but I think that piece of kit sucks. We are kinda limited on what we can wear in the 82nd, but so far the CSM either hasnt noticed the RACKs many people are wearing or he doesnt mind. Hopefully, back at Bragg I'll be able to continue wearing the RACK.

Yup, I have the same issue I have way to much shit in mine before I even start adding mags.
The reason why it sticks out so far on either side is B/C it was designed to go over IIIA body Armor. Thats why there are no shoulder pads.
Talk to Gene the owner (IIRC) at HSGI he is a great guy, he'll talk your ear off but he is a great guy. I ordered mine when he first started production of the Watsach, back then he was talking about adding removable shoulder pads. I don't know if he has started making them or not.

Got the PM, thought I replied. Bottom line is that asking the Gringos for help is keeping the issue dead in the water. As far as padding I have an old set of BQM alice pack add on strap pads that Im going to try and see if it helps out.

What have you guys done with your excess shoulder strap material?
taped it, did not cut it off - want to make sure that I can wear it over an OTV.
GAP - nope, just on a weekend jaunt, that was the before pic - folks wanted to see a wasatch bashed out - for carry, it sucked, had a 3L storm in the back pocket as a counterweight, worked fine, but I am going to be building some foam padded strap covers for the rig.

BII - Basic Issue Item, all the extra stuff that comes along with something that has parts, i.e. the sling, magazines, cleaning kit and BFA for a rifle. -10s usually have this list in the back (note to self: convince CSA that Rangers should learn to read ;)).

Sorry, I guess I should have proof read my post LOL. BII is just what was mentioned in one of the above posts, for my PVS14s, its the rhino mount and the attaching arm. The ICOM Radio and compass are two separate things, sorry for the confusion.

Damn dude, I was searching ICOM's site (which sucks, and is hard to navigate) looking all over for a radio compass!!! I thought it might be similiar to a Rhino GPS/Radio. :D

After reading that, I have to ask, what are you carrying on your person/1st line? Do you use a multi-tool?
A lot of that was just transferred over from my old patrolling harness, so once I got into an environment, I might pare it down. If you dumped yours, you might find you carry more than you realize. Some of my list may remind you of something you forgot.
My 1st line list would be on my thread also in the PG forum here obscurely entitled "1st Line Gear", or something to that effect.

Believe it or not, just water......I prefer the slimmer/less bulky flasks to the heavier 1 qts........
I'm a believer in always having some water in your 2nd line, even though I do use my camelback all the time. So I carry these pilot flasks.

I still carry 1 quarts, although I get a lot less field time these days...
You may want to check out using Platypus 0.5L sport bladders or their 0.375L "Little Nipper" bladders in place of the flasks, as they collapse, weigh almost nothing, and take up very little room.
would concur on the .5 platys... they're a perfect fit for my Columbia ski jacket breast pockets... should have seen the look at the Kimpo AP screener when I showed her! :D
The great thing about the platys is you can roll them up and wrap them with a rubber band (loosely) and they'll keep out of place.

I do have the platypus bladders in all sizes, but I just prefer the flasks....
