Get Selected For Special Forces: How to Successfully Complete Assessment & Selection by MAJ Joe Martin with MSG Rex Dodson.
Are you looking for answers how to prepare for Special Forces Training?
I know how you feel.
Here's why...
When I was preparing for SF Assessment & Selection (SFAS), I felt the same way when looked for a book to help me prepare. There wasn't one. Lots of stuff about SF and the history. Nothing on how to prepare for the training.
Here's what I found...I had to go from person to person...anyone I saw with an SF tab, asking them:
- What did you do to get ready?
- How did you prepare?
- What would you do differently?
It was crazy. I was at Fort Bliss, TX and there weren't many SF guys there. So I had to figure it out the hard way. I kept training while I was at Ft Benning in the Infantry Advanced Course...although there were more, there still weren't that many SF guys available to ask for advice...so I kept training.
Since then I completed the SFQC and served as a SF Team Leader.
In November 2001, I was tasked with re-engineering the Special Operations Prepartion Course (SOPC) to meet the needs of the 18X Program. We found out the 7 reasons why candidates fail out of SFAS, then we built a program to minimize or eliminate each of the factors.
It worked. 18Xs started completing SFAS and getting selected at TWICE the rate of Active Duty Enlisted Soldiers (Over 70% vs 30-35%).
When the Commanding General asked us:
"How can we better prepare SF Candidates for BEFORE they report to Fort Bragg?"
We knew the answer was to capture the lessoned learned and write the book.
So we did. We based it on the question:
"If your son was getting ready for SFAS, what would you tell him?"
GET SELECTED FOR SPECIAL FORCES is the answer to that question.
When we realized the book would make money, we decided the right answer was to donate ALL of the royalties to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (www.specialops.org), which provides college scholarships and eductaion counselling for the children of Special Operations Personnel who are killed in training or operational missions.
Our goal is to raise over $20,000 for the Warrior Foundation in order to fund a scholarship. In order to GUARANTEE we do that, we shipped over 1,000 copies directly to the Warrior Foundation Headquaters in Tampa. All we have to do now is get the word out and let future candidates know this resource is available to them.
If you are serious about going Special Forces or just want to know more about the Special Forces Training Pipeline, GET SELECTED FOR SPECIAL FORCES is right for you.

Just so you know, the books go out MEDIA MAIL, so it's a little slower than normal priority mail.
Looking forward to your feedback...

Received this from someone just finished reading GET SELECTED.
With his permission, here's his comments:
Sir,
Received the book last Friday-- sat down to have a quick look and didn't get up until I had read it through cover to cover. I read it again over the weekend and now my wife is reading it. Outstanding... the only word that will do it justice. This is exactly the book I was looking for. This will be my constant companion for the next six months until I ship out for OSUT. Thanks again and I look forward to receiving updates from the website.
Sincerely,
Robert J
Robert,
Thanks for the feedback!
With your permission, I'd like to post your note on www.professionalsoldiers.com.
Please let me know.
Thanks again,
Joe Martin
Sir,
Absolutely! No doubt there are hundreds of guys like myself out there looking for the same kind of critical info to help them on their road to SFAS. I'm more than happy to help spread the word.
Sincerely,
Robert J

Sir, this book is incredible. I received it on Monday, and haven't been able to put it down. So far, many of my questions that were stilll un-answered, are no longer that way.
Many thanks to you for the work you've put into this!!
Dave
I'll post up again in a couple of days, once I have had a chance to finish it :)

If you are planning on dancing, unless the book weighs 65 pounds, is OD green and has shoulder straps, you better be putting it down at least 2 hours in the morning and another 2 hours in the evening. Try reading in the front leaning rest.

I do apologize if I addressed him incorrectly. Just want to make sure I show the proper respect.
Just want to make sure I show the proper respect.just keep doing push-ups, maybe he won't notice...
was wondering how long it would take someone to say something along the lines that NDD did.
When I say the title of this thread I thought, "save your money, use the search button on PS.com" The black pearl of wisdom.

Lksteve, you make a valid point. The true test of the quality of the book is when it comes to crunch time - if you can even judge the impact of it. But its just like all the other information and recommendations out there - it's more exposure and insight that a prospective candidate can avail himself to.
And the money is essentially a donation to the Foundation, so nothing wrong with getting a free gift in the process.
Personally, I'm a long way off from even being able to even put in a packet for SFAS, so I take advantage of the amount of time I have. Listening to the Quiet Professionals on these forums, as well as the books they write, seems to be a prime way to learn and prepare. Nobody said going the officer approach would be easy.

I think that the point made was that knowledge is fine, but just reading the book is not enough to get you through SFAS. You actually have to spend the time DOING the PT recommended in the book.
There appear to be a lot of kids in the currrent generation who seem to think that there is an easy way to get anything, and that with enough information, you can skip the hard parts.
SFAS and the SFQC do not work that way and a smart candidate (that we are looking for) will realize that and do what they have to to prep.
OTOH, if reading the book can help you prepare your feet, your mind, or organize your PT routine, then so be it. After all, as the book concludes, TAKE ACTION.
TR
You actually have to spend the time DOING the PT recommended in the book.doing the PT, adapting the mindset...evaluating your strengths and weaknesses and developing a plan to overcome them...it is not an easy task...the money goes to a good cause and the information in the book should help, but the onus is on the prospective candidate...

I may be underqualified to vouch for the validity of this book based on a lack of life experience, but I found it to be a good read.
When I first read about it, my initial reaction was much the same as NG M4 Shooter's...might as well just use the Search button. As reviews started pouring in, paired with descriptions, I realized that sentiment might be false so decided to spend the $20 and give the book a try.
It starts out with things you can Doogle, a brief description of what SF is and the training pipeline. After this, it moves on to an analysis of "why people fail," which I thought was a pretty cool chapter not only for listing WHY but HOW to avoid those. Some of that you could find with a Search button, others (e.g. how to maximize chances at the board, should you have to face it) you couldn't.
It goes on to a pretty detailed description of foot care, beyond "powder and drive on." Logically following that is a chapter on boot selection and maintenance, to include how to lace (well...your options doing so) and break them in, which I suppose is easier to learn from a book by trial and error.
PT chapter is next, followed by chapters on family and mentors. The last third or so of the book is a bunch of appendices to the first two thirds.
I thought it was a pretty quick, easy read with a lot of little pointers that could significantly improve one's quality of life while going through lots of training, besides the various phases of the SFQC.
LOL. It's ok Dave. Just don't call me Sir. My parents were married before I was born and I can pour piss out of a jungle boot without reading the instructions on the heel. i was raised to not piss in my jungle boots... :D
I didnt say not to help out the worthy cause. I just spoke my initial reaction. I've read enough of TR, NDD, Kyobanim to know what one must do to adequately prepare himself.
A program that stresses rucking, running, push ups, pull ups, abs, grip strength, a spot of swimming, diet and recovery will, if given the appropriate amount of dedication and attention to detail - along with a mind content on doing nothing that doesnt serve the goal will get you through.
Which program a Soldier decides to use is up to him. If you choose the book, good on you. If you choose to read what is written here on PS you'll be well advised also.
That is only my opinion. I am NOT a special forces soldier, have never been one, never been in a group or carried a rucksack for an ODA. I'm a 36 year old grunt, with good infantry skills, and a CAT III dlab score. I've been around. Coulda, shoulda, woulda, wannabe. Can't. My legs are shot, even after surgery, I can barely eek out a passing PT score with the appropriate amount of vicodin.
But I enjoy the mental company of these fine Soldiers. I am glad to know some in person that I can call friends. Even some foreign SF guys. And to a man, the story of success is the same. Hard work, a spot of luck, a focused mind, and they BELIEVE they can.
Well thats it for now.

Which program a Soldier decides to use is up to him. If you choose the book, good on you. If you choose to read what is written here on PS you'll be well advised also.
How about both. ;)
Going through the book, I've seen stuff there that's not on PS.com. Likewise I've found info. here that's not in the book.
Or, maybe I'm not using the search function efficiently enough. :D
Either way it's true, you actually have to DO, not just READ if you want to achieve your goals.

Aric

Fair enough. If the track record at SOPC is any indicator, I'm confident guys will come back from selection and say it helped.
For less than $25, I never promised the book would carry the ruck for them. :)
I just ordered a copy and I'm super excited.
Thanks!

I flipped through the book at the ASOM museum in Fayetteville, didn't buy it then. It seemed a good read, gonna order one up soon. Especially since its for the SOWF charity.

THEY'RE NOT SELLING MY BOOK!
Fort Lewis Clothing Sales isn't selling GET SELECTED FOR SPECIAL FORCES.
They pulled it off the shelves.
Last week they had a great display of 100 books in a special display right as you walked in the store.
When I walked into the store on Monday, the display was gone. I couldn't find GET SELECTED anywhere.
When I asked Brandy, the store Book Manager, where it was...why they weren't selling it, she explained they had a problem.
"A problem?" I asked. "What could possibly be the problem?"
She explained "We put up a 100 copies early last week. Because they were selling so quickly, we had to pull the books or we would have run out long before your book signing. We couldn't have a book signing without any books!"
THEY WEREN'T SELLING GET SELECTED BECAUSE IT WAS SELLING TOO QUICKLY!
Unfortunately, the warehouse couldn't get them any more before the book signing. Most of my books are in Yuma, Arizona....so I managed to get them a resupply with the 25 copies we had at my wife's house to help the shortage.

Got the book a couple days ago and it's a great resource. Haven't finished it, but just skimming through the chapters and I've found great information already!
I got mine today. So far I love it.
Just ordered one. I find it absolutely amazing though that the picture on the cover is a friend of mine who is now a 1SG at Ft. Drum, and the pic is of him in Bagram when he was a SFC with 2-87 IN, 10th MTN. He is a 2-75 vet, and wears their combat scroll, but he has never been SF. His pic gets pretty wide circulation though. Amazing!

Right on. It's tough to find great shots of SF guys in action that have been released to the public. When we were designing the cover, I personally went though EVERY photo that the Army had released publicly on their web site (there were over 1,700 photos if I remember correctly).
He looks like somebody who'd have no problem with Selection. Rangers historically have the highest success at SFAS.
I give credit on the Copyright Page to him as a NCO from 10th Mtn.
Didn't know his name, but the shot was too good to pass up.
If you PM me with his name and address, I'll get him a copy in the mail.
Thanks,

Just got done reading it.
There's so much I liked about this book.
It covers the usual recommended workouts and training to prepare; has a great 30 day workout plan as well.
Also, I liked the in-depth advice on taking care of your feet and boots and gear, as well as how to take care of your most important piece of gear - your mind.
This is information I've found somewhat lacking and the author really lays out some good advice on how to prepare your mind for SFAS and avoid the main reason candidates fail.
The recommended reading/listening/viewing list is not to be missed as well.

I lied.
We didn't sell out.
We did, however, sell over 30 books during the book signing at Ft Lewis Clothing Sales.
Not a bad day, especially considering the Clothing Sales Manager said they were having a slow day.
Thanks to all who were able to make it out today.
Outstanding, Sir. My congratulations to you and the SOWF.

Sir, I bought and have read your book. It is awesome! I am 41, a support troop (MI) and will not be attending Special Forces assessment. I do appreciate your knowledge and information. The information in the book, however, is better than any else I have seen as regards Special Forces. Young men, both active duty and those that aspire to be SF will definitely benefit from the book. If they read and follow the recomendations you wrote, they'll have a greater chance of succeeding. The parts about mental toughness are the best.
I bought the book at the clothing and sales, and have been reading it daily. I'm recommending it to everybody in the pre-ranger course down here. I've found it pretty useful so far. Thank you for writing this , Sir.

Great feed back on GET SELECTED continues to roll in. :lifter
After the author gave me his permission, I wanted to share this with you...
In a message dated 7/15/2005 3:05:33 P.M. US Mountain Standard Time:
Major Joe Martin,
Sir my name is CH (CPT) Primo Davis and I am the battalion chaplain for 1st 502nd Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne (Air Assault). Ranger school is hopefully in the near future for me and for sometime now I have been considering the opportunity of being a chaplain in the special operations community. It was for this reason that I purchased "Get Selected for Special Forces".
Although the assignment of chaplains to Special Forces units is much different than the average officer, I know that should I be assigned to the special operations community the more knowledge I have, and the more I personally embrace the Special Forces mentality, the better I will be able to serve Special Forces soldiers and their family members as a chaplain.
I read the book in two days, and it only took me that long because it wasn't a weekend. The book is GREAT! I believe the principles you deal with in the book will not only make a soldier "get selected", but when applied in all areas of life will make a man an even greater man than he already is.
The real reason I wanted to drop you a little note was because as a chaplain, I find the book filled with elements of faith and the teachings of the bible. I'm not sure of your exact faith journey, but that fact that you know the Lord is evident in every page of the book. The principles of team work, determination, love for your brother, health, temperance, positive mental attitude etc. are all teachings found throughout the Bible. (As you probably well know) Reading the book not only motivated me as a soldier, but as a chaplain and preacher as well.
I thought you should know, from the unique Infantry Chaplains perspective: TWO THUMBS UP! I will promote this book as much as I can, not only for the valuable content, but for the much worthy cause which it supports. Look for an order with my name on it from my chapel here at Ft. Campbell, so I can get this book in the hands of my guys who need it.
May God continue to bless you as you do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Very Respectfully and...
In Continued Service to God & Country,
CH (CPT) Primitivo Davis

Only 5 copies of GET SELECTED to go.
It's true.
I just got off the phone with the Warrior Foundation.
Dow said we've already sold 245 books... so they only have 5 books left until we have successfully raised over $5,000 for the foundation.
If you hurry, you can be the one to put us over the 25% mark towards our short term goal of funding a scholarship by raising over $20,000 for the foundation.
Any takers?

Just got mine today and finished it today. I have this to say. TO EVERYONE!!! 18X, Rep-63, SF Maybes. after you read this book, If you have any and I mean ANY!!! Questions that are'nt covered in this book and here and on another site, and you ask a question that isnt covered in this book or here then all I can say is "Cast or Tab" :munchin there should be no questions (Maybe Its me lol)
W-M Sir,
I this book is a read through again and again I have less than 60 days before I ship and I cant tell you how much chapters 3-1 through well 10-1!! were just a wealth of info. I can even say that if you get this book and someone has a question (Not something like "What if I have 1 kidney") Read and read again. this book is awesome and I thank you from the bottom of my boots (hehe) for this.
got the book, read it...#1, the goddam thing was written 30 years to late for me...i would advise any prospective SF soldier to read Brad Handy's comments on the back cover...there are a lot of guys who went before without this book, without SOPC, without a screening process before enlistment...the odds were not good for a guy to go from High School to SF, but there are many among our numbers who did...thus, if you prepare yourself, if you avail yourself of the programs and training opportunities available, success is within your grasp...WM beats that point in quite effectively...
#2 when i was in SFQC, we basically free-based tincture benzoin...i never had a blister...but i hardly ever have blisters, anyway...it is a forbidden item on the packing list...i guess after some research, someone figured the benefits were greatly oversold...i won't argue the point, so read chapters 7 and 8 often...read them until you are qualified...by then, the lessons in those chapters should be old hat...
#3 i guess you need to bone up on the Ranger Creed...if an instructor mentions something more than once, it's going to be very important...WM recommends a paragraph a night, then recommends daily recitation once initial mastery is achieved...i don't know if he picked that up in Harmony Church (the only place i did that much reading of the Ranger Creed), but he's on to something (i just don't know what it is)...
my analysis...the book is a tool...tools kept in the shed do no work...if the damn book ain't wore out when you show up for SFAS, you've probably screwed the pooch...if the book is worn out, but your boots aren't broken in, shame on you...if the book is in tatters but you are not in shape...the bus for the 82nd will take you there...
i don't know why, but don't ask WM why a calf stretch prevents shin splints...he says he doesn't know...(i think he's holding out on you guys... :D )
well done...it takes quite a bit of effort to synthesize that much information into something a guy can read in a short time, yet still provide enough information to get someone through the intial selection process...once again, from where i sit, it's a good job...
BMT (RIP)

I'm sure you receive as many of these as you do books that you send out, but....
Just flew back from LA this afternoon. Found GET SELECTED waiting for me. Just finished reading it; and will now take the pleasure of reading it thru again with a notepad!
It almost goes with out saying how much all of us appreciate the information you provide in the book. Thank-you to you both for going above and beyond, and serving those of us who aren’t even officially active yet. This book will / has already added to the knowledge base I need to make the most of my SFAS class.
See you 'Q side'

Gentlemen-
I would like to thank the two of you for writing such an informative book. I was told of this books existance last week by a friend who just recently attended SFAS and was selected. He recommended the book to me and I went and picked it up at the PX. I acctually read the whole thing in 1 sitting. Very informative, and reassuring. I knew 80% of the stuff in the book, but the example of PT program, tips on footcare as well as boots was worth the 15 bucks I paid for it. Thank you and I hope to use your book more in the future.
Though I have never been to SFAS, and I have zero credibility, I do however recommend this book due to the fact it builds confidence and answers a lot of mediocre questions that should never be asked here. Plus the royalties are for a great cause.

Been a while since been on here, but wanted to let you know that GET SELECTED raised another $50,000 this year for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation this year...bringing the TOTAL RAISED since publication to just over $340,000.
Most of that is due this website in particular helping raise awareness of this valuable training tool and the great cause it supports.
Thanks!

Great job!
Is it still possible to order this book directly from the Special Operations Warrior Foundation? None of the links I've found (here or on google) are working, including the one for Warrior-Mentor's own site. A search on the SOWF site itself also nets nothing.
My son found this book extremely valuable in his preparation for SFAS (he was selected and is currently attending the Q course), and now a friend's son (currently a combat medic) is interested as well.

Is it still possible to order this book directly from the Special Operations Warrior Foundation? None of the links I've found (here or on google) are working, including the one for Warrior-Mentor's own site. A search on the SOWF site itself also nets nothing.

If you can't find it on-line, the Fort Bragg Clothing Sales Store is still selling copies. Leverage your son to prioritize his copious free time and send you one.

LOL! He's checking for me. His fiancee is checking at Bliss. My friend's son tried the clothing sales store at Benning, no joy.
If it's just a matter of finding a copy, here are some links. I am not sure what amount currently goes to fund the SOWF. The Warrior Mentor website has been down for at least the last two years. Congrats to your son!
