View Full Version : SFAS Preparation Book
I first read C.S. a while back when I started reading anything I could about the history and mission [..anything, really] of the Army Special Forces - I am a big fan of research, permitting. Learned a good bit and developed a stronger sense of respect for the people that even tryout, and a great deal for those who make it... (and the need for some good boots and a level head). So re: the PT, very strong copy, TR.

...I am a big fan of research, permitting...
Morgan:
There is nothing wrong with researching SF. However, it isnt the test (or a picture as you put it) that a candidate needs. They need the answers that can only be found in the heart. Those seeking to find other sources for "the answers" are cheating themselves, the Regiment, and our Brothers.
We arent looking for individuals who can find the answers in a book but someone who has the answers no matter the test they face.
I would have picked a different book though, but then again I am looking at CS from a different perspective than you. As TR said, your time would be better spent PT-ing.
Crip
Copy. I am continually soul searching and having heart to hearts with myself and occasionally my mom (my dad nearly disowned me when I applied to the service academies)... the mission that SF carries out is one that I believe in. It is why I am trying to learn as much about what it is you do [and have done] so I can make the best life decision possible... I feel it in my heart, but I need to more in my mind (how it will affect family is my main concern).
Again, thank you to all the QPs for that life decision you made when you enlisted/commissioned.
Respectfully,
Morgan

Great News Sir, and six months ahead of scheduale.
On a different note, news back from the most recent 18X BCT is that around 60% of candidates dropped their 18X contract before even completeing Basic and as much as 80%+ havn't heard of the book.
Many of them seem to ship very quickly after enlisting and many of them walked into the recruiting office not knowing what 18X was. Surely the book could make all the difference here?

It certainly couldn't hurt.
I just purchased my copy at clothing sales a few days ago, and it is an amazing book. I'm glad to contribute to the cause any way I can. I'm going to attempt the try-out next April. Thank you Sir, for the opportunity.
WM, sir, I sent a question to the email that's listed on your website (about four days ago) but I haven't received a reply yet, so I'm just posting in here just to make sure it didn't get lost in a spam filter or something.
Even though I've already passed my 'selection' (different to the US SF one of course), I'd still like to get the book. For one, I've heard that it's great and informative (I take an interest in US SF), and secondly, the money goes to a good cause. I'd just like to know if international shipping is available before I pay for the book through the online Paypal service?
Thanks if you can answer my question.

Finally got my hands on Anthony Robbins tapes. Excellent stuff. Forget all the psychology classes and psychiatric nursing that I ever took, my ultimate pursuit in understanding the human mind and finding out what makes a person tick is satisfied (for now) by his work. Found so much similarities in how he got started...too bad, I wasn't born earlier enough :D
Thank you Warrior Mentor Sir, the skeptical-me would have skipped this had it not been for the recommendation in the book.
Sir,
I purchased your book several months ago and have read it several times. It is an excellent book that really opened my eyes to many techinques. Your boot lacing technique is used by at least half the Infantrymen in the Platoon I am serving in. Whenever a soldier would come up complaining of "shin splints" or Blisters, I would recommend your boot and lace technique to them. It single handedly dropped my post ruck march "casualties";) to zero. I am looking forward to going to SFAS come my return from Afghanistan, and I am sure I will be glad to have read your book.
Thank you,

Was waiting in the mail when I got back from a fun run. Its a great book and really helpful. Can't wait to do the 30 day workout.
Just placed my order. Hopefully it went through, because after I was finished, I was redirected to the "thanks" page, but it said page not found.
Just a FYI, the link from Warrior-Mentor.com is no good. But all you have to do is search the menu on the left of the page once you receive the "page not found" message, and you will find the, "Get selected for SF", option.
Thanks to all the Prefessionals who made this book possible. I can't wait to receive it and start reading.

Sir,
A fine book, and a great read. A buddy of mine who is nearing the end of the pipeline sent me a copy, but I couldn't wait and bought a copy anyway. It's not the price of the book, its a donation, and an investment in my future. I look forward to applying the lessons learned when I get to SFAS in the near future. Thanks for sharing your advice and expertise.
Almost forgot, the Ft. Riley MCS needs more, I bought the last copy. Thanks!
Just adding my thanks for Warrior-Mentor's book, which I got last week online. Clearly and directly written. Particularly liked the 30-day breakdown in Appendix A and the boot/foot-care info. No real suggestions yet - maybe after I return from SFAS in March.
Thanks!

I have 'Get Selected' and have read it 3 times, going on my 4th. Its a great resource. Tons of personal development tips that will serve you throughout life. My question is regarding the workout at the end: My recruiter sent me a workout regiment that looks like it comes from the JFKSW Center. Has anybody compared/tested which is better? (the one in 'Get Selected' vs the one sent out by recruiters). I would combine them, but i am afraid of overtraining. Anybody have any insight? thanks!

I would combine both of the workouts, remember that you cannot jump into the 5 week program if you have never ruckmarch on a regular basis before or your physical condition is poor. The two training methods work but as the book and the 5 week program state you should be able to develop your own sustainment program after completing each training cycle( before attending SFAS I completed the 5 week program twice and believe me, they give it to you for a reason and it pays big dividends while at SFAS).
Rucking without a good mileage on your feet will do nothing but overload your bones and ligaments and you'll most likely develop stress fractures and muscle imbalances. Another big one's that will help you before and during your preparation for SFAS is ruckmarching uphill, and swimming(but i mean swimming more than 1000 m each time you do it).
If you have more than 6 months to prepare let me know i will send you different links to websites offering good workouts to prepare your body.
Finally there is a ton of information on this excellent website, use the search button.
Good luck!:lifter

Loved this book! I was looking for something that would prepare me for what lays ahead and this has been the most helpful so far. I bought another book, and although it provided some of the same material, Get Selected was by far more detailed (I especially liked the in-depth advice on boots). Thanks again Warrior-Mentor and to everyone else! I ship out for OSUT in a month and can't wait, but I feel as though I am a little better prepared for what is to come. Really looking forward to Jump school!

I've read the book about 5 times. It's awesome! The PT schedule starts off slow then works it's way up. You have to be really disciplined, and not put PT off to do everything on the calendar. I bought mine at the PX, and I believe some of the money goes to a donation for warriors.

If you order from the Warrior Foundation, you'll pay less. Because they ship media mail, it will take slightly longer to get than if you order through Amazon, you'll pay more, but it can ship USPS Priority... which is faster than media mail.

It has been beat to death, but I wanted to add my praise to this book as my first real post. I ordered it last year while in Afghanistan at the recommendation of some GRP guys I was around. It was a great resource. I am in Iraq now and training with a few other guys. We ordered some more copies to help us prepare for a possible slot at SFAS this September. Don't know if that is going to work out (we're Guard), but we will be ready either way. When we finally get to go, we will feel more secure in our abilities and knowledge because of the information available in this book. I hope everyone who is serious about selection and/or about giving to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation would purchase one, or more.

At our last drill (with the local RSP of the FLARNG) we had a 6-mile road march. I showed up with my boot's shoelaces tied in two stages the way that the book recommends, so that they are tight on the feet and looser on the calf. The cadre were not impressed and, remarking that such an arrangement was nonmilitary, made me tie them normally. They did ask where I had learned to tie my boots that way, and I almost told them that I had read about it in a book called Get Selected! about preparing for the special forces, but I held my tongue and muttered vaguely about the internet.

What type of unit is it?
The Recruit Sustainment Program -- a place to keep enlistees who have not yet gone to BCT, or who are between BCT and AIT. The program's main goal is to prepare recruits to attend BCT, so they put great emphasis on doing things very much by the book. In this case, that meant that the knots tying the shoelaces should not be visible, which is impossible to accomplish if you tie them in two stages.

I appreciate your point, but strictly speaking, "they" are probably right. The regulation governing the wear and care of the ACU states in relevant part that: "5E1. ARMY COMBAT BOOTS (HOT WEATHER AND TEMPERATE WEATHER) . . . . THE BOOTS ARE LACED DIAGONALLY WITH TAN LACES, WITH THE EXCESS LACE TUCKED INTO THE TOP OF THE BOOT UNDER THE BLOUSED TROUSERS."
The SSG (a veteran of the 1st ID) who told me about the laces was passing down an order from the MSG. The SSG didn't care personally, but he was going to make damn sure I laced the boots the way the MSG wanted. I think it would have betrayed a lack of SA to have pressed the issue. This is not a high-speed unit and I am not looking to stand out other than through excelling in PT (at that drill I scored 321) and learning as much as I can. I doubt that how the boots are laced would be a problem at the 20th Group NQP program, for example.
That being said, I am trying to come up with a way to improve upon the two-part lacing system that does not call so much attention to itself.

Smart. The first SOF Imperative: Know your operational environment.
Have a set of boots you roadmarch with...and set for the drills you have with the conventional folks. I didn't know or use the dual lacing system when I went to basic training (1989). Not sure how the drill sergeants would have responded to it...guessing neutral at best by ignoring it.

I agree.
You have to choose the moment to defy authority and when flaunt your individuality.
Since the people telling you to comply with the Army regulation were senior to you, in your chain of command, correct, and control whether you get to go to SFAS or not, IMHO, you made the right decision.

You cannot rate the book on Amazon.com unless you purchase the book from their site. I did not get the book from Amazon, and am a bit dissapointed that I cannot help and write a review.
Are there any other sites the book is posted on that others may be able to write reviews? I have spread the word around my unit, and the surrounding areas, but would like to help more, if possible.

Great book, and fantastic information. Without sounding like too much of a fanboy, I just wanted to say "thanks for the awesome resource, Warrior Mentor".
The foot care section was a big eye opener, and the training schedule really whooped my butt into shape. I'm only a few points off of a 300 AFPT score (and 3 months before I even go to Basic), got nice tough feet, and a tremendous amount of self confidence that I CAN/MUST do this and I know I have you and your Co-Author to thank for all of it.
Best Regards,

I am always reminded of how it was when I 'm tired. When I'm tired I still make a point of doing more work. A thing to do prep wise is to fatique yourself with some hard work and PT. Then when you are not feeling like it, pick up that ruck and do a ten K. Much of what I remember of operations in Group was wind, rain, snow, cold, scalding heat, and pitch dark, isthey are all just a paragraph in an op order. Your best work will be done in these conditions and in places no one else would go, and you'll be tired and hurting but that will not stop you. SF thrives where others just survive. Blitz
Thank you for taking the time to post these words. Its men like you sharing thoughts like these that inspire me more than anything else lately. Sometimes it feels like "Groundhog Day" over here; every day seems like the last ("Hey. it's Sunday. Did yall know it's Sunday?).

I bough the book and I'm looking forward to reading it.
Being a Canadian non-citizen/non-green-card holder my chances of making it one day in the pipeline are very slim but anyway I'm sure it'll be a goldmine of good info (especially on PT/rucking/foot injuries/mental conditioning/etc)..

Get Selected a few days ago, and I myself could not put it down. I have since put on order several of the titles recommended by Lt. Col Martin, as I am sure they will also be usefull tools in my preparation for SFAS. I am actually re-reading Get Selected and highlighting all they key points I feel I need to remember the most. Thanks again for the great advice Warrior Mentor.

Got the book in the mail two days ago. Read it in short order. The author claims that it's an easy read and full of the information that you would give to your kid if he wanted to go to SFAS.
It is.
The book is solid. On a first time through ( I'm going through with a little more detail now) the most striking thing was how you phrase a question. Instead of asking "CAN" I complete SFAS/Q, ask "HOW" can I complete SFAS/Q. I tell you, when you change all those "cans" to "hows" it instantly boosts your confidence and optimism.
Who would have thought that one little word could make such a difference.
Thanks for a great resource!

Been working the numbers to see where GET SELECTED is and where we'll be....
looks like could break $200,000 in total donations to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation this year!
This is 20% of the way to ultimate goal...it's taken 5 years to get this far...will keep chipping away at it...
.
I've read through this entire book twice and reference to it constantly. It's a great book!
I bought 2 copies of this book.
One was for my father, who was very curious about the entire process.
The other was for me, of course. :p
Very enjoyable and informative read. It will remain nearby for a while.

Just ordered an autographed copy Sir. Looking forward to reading the book and happy to contribute to a worthy cause.
Picked up a copy at the Buckley exchange last drill. Has given me some great ideas on breaking up my training regimen, as well as some excellent advice on breaking a plateau on my running. (I have been stuck at the 14:00 minute mark for a couple of months. My goal is 13:00 before I ship to Selection early next year.)
If anyone has any doubts about the usefulness of this book, get rid of them. It is an excellent tool for the toolbox, and as has been mentioned, one any aspiring QP shouldn't be without.
Thank you sir, for an excellent resource.

A lot of people get selected without reading it. Many people also do not get selected after reading it. Ultimately, your success or failure is your responsibility. Not a book's.
It better not be information I already know.
Or what?
Do you already know what you know and know what you do not know?
TR
I've skimmed through this book; Its a for dummies guide to things like foot care, nutrition, how to pack and waterproof a rucksack, some PT suggestions, how to think your way through an attribute, how to maptack a map etc.
It's essentially all the things you would get if you had experience in a field unit (with the exceptions to some things of course) without having to learn the lessons the hard way. That is-by actually doing it.
An officer on my selection phase of OUR ('our' being the canadian equiv. to SFAS) had it and swore by it. Underlining all the motivational passages and had it in his kit at all times. Needless to say when he quit he left it on his bed after all his things were pack and he was gone. He lasted 72 hours of 24 days.
Whatever his reason for leaving, is none of our business, it wasn't for him. What got me through was in my heart and in my head, and theres no book i could have gotten that out of.

Curious, I would think that a book about the training, by the guy who used to run it, would be more relevant than the opinion of someone who skimmed it and has never actually attended the training.
Especially since, like it or not, we are running a program that allows people to enlist for SF training right off the street.
I will grant that the book is not a magic talisman, and you actually have to do the work to gain the benefits.
TR
Just made my first pass through the book. Fairly interesting, and I'll definitely be putting more focus on conditioning my feet now, as well as check out a couple of the products the authors advocated.

TR, TS and Admins, sorry if I step out of my lane on this one...
Tequila, judging by your string of posts and way you get under everyone's skin with ramblings and random threads, it is obvious that LtCol Martin's book has information you don't already know. The book is very insightful and an excellent tool, if you used the Search button you would know this much already. My selection date is fast approaching and I am thankful for the resources this website has provided, maybe it's time you realize the gift that's laying before you.
IMHO a few more years in the Army, some NCOES, and much needed wall to wall counseling from your Chain of Command will get your maturity level up and open your eyes to the fact that it is a PRIVILEGE to serve in the Military, let alone SF. I know this because that's what it took for me to lose my 'fresh from Benning no one can break me' mentality many years ago, trust me it faded real fast once my SL got some one on one counseling time :D
Maybe hearing this from a Non-QP will show you that its not a 'one-sided' opinion or that the Mods are 'out to get you'. I wish you luck in heeding to the advice that all the QP's have laid out for you and dont take it for granted. This site is a great asset, not only for SFAS/SFQC etc., but for life in the Army. Good luck brother.
Helpful advice is where you find it, and how you receive it.
The book will not make or break an individual the book will give advice from some that know. It can be criticized by those who don't know, but in the end it is a very good reference for many. As a note many of the QPs here never had a book, but in the end it's what you are made of. The book isn't a magic pill as stated by The Reaper. So for many I suggest maybe not so quick in criticism without having being able to access it through experience. Mark Twain said "There are two kinds of advice, the kind you take and the kind you don't."
Just my Zwei centavos. Blitzzz

A friend just forwarded me this link:
LINK:
http://www.specialops.org/news/55750/Get-Selected-Donations-to-SOWF-Pass-Quarter-Million-Mark.htm
When we first started this project, the goal was to raise $20,000 to fund one scholarship. After passing that, I set our goals at raising over $50,000 in order to be able to say we beat Tiger Woods! Since then, my sights are now set on catching up with the Steinbrenner's and the New York Yankees, who've generously given over a MILLION DOLLARS to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.
Now it's just a matter of time...
This accomplishment would absolutely NOT have been possible without the support of ProfessionalSoldiers.com. Big thanks to Team Sergeant, The Reaper and Crew who have helped so many aspiring future Special Forces candidates through their mentorship and tough love on this site. God Bless the troops, the families and you LTC Martin.......:D
It's great to hear such contributions are being made. I'm happy to say that I was able to help by purchasing the book and the information gained in invaluable. Thank you for the work done on this project, sir. I look forward to applying the teachings soon.
I purchased the book 4 years ago, reading it again and again and still learning from it. Ordering one today for a fellow friends young teenager who is shipping out in a month, whether he reads it or not, the donation to a great cause it what counts.
Sir,
After meandering through various stores in my area I came to the knowledge that no one seems to carry this book; even Barnes and Nobles. I hate buying things online, however, I cracked down and just purchased this book off Amazon.com. With the hopes of being an SF Candidate in the near future, and hopefully being among the ranks of the Best, I look forward to reading this book. Would like to thank you, and the various others, who took the time to write such a book for rookies like me.
Much appreciated Sir,
RC
@RC
I think the purpose it is sold online is so 100% of proceeds go to SOWF... Eliminating the middle man's profit.
Ah yes.. that would make sense. Does Amazon.com charge a profit for listing it? Just curious. If so, is there another site that gives 100% to the SOWF. Don't think it's too late to cancel my Amazon order
EDIT: Sorry for the stupidity. Read 4 posts up and found the site that offers 100% to the SOWF.

By chance, would any one have a copy of the Special Reports "RUNNING: A CrASH Course for Beginners" mentioned as a Bonus from the book they could send my way?
Warrior-Mentor,
I just ordered a copy of your book 20 Jan 2011. I had it overnighted and recieved it yesterday. I have finished reading it as of today and I just want to say WOW. The advice that is located in that book is bar-none. I'm kind of going in blind, in a sense, due to the fact that there are no SF units near where I currently live. My state doesn't even have Infantry units to ask about rucking adivce. However The information in this book, along with the wealth of knowledge readily available on this site will prove to be invaluable when I prepare to attend SFAS. I also liked the comment about "Reading the stickies and using the search bar" for the ProfessionalSoldiers.com reference.
Once again, Sir, thank you for putting together such an outstanding guide. I look forward to the many nights of reading, re-reading and reading again to be able to digest all of the information.

I have already read this book and it is the reason I found my way top this web site. I just wanted to say thank you for putting the book together and it has proven to be the a great asset to my preperations.
Picked this book up in the PX back in 2007 and never stopped reading it. I may need a new copy, as my first copy is now well broken in and falling apart from being stuffed in my travel bag wherever I go. Some of the information is mostly geared for 18x, which he covers extensively, but there is vital information about how to prep yourself and your mindset before getting to SFAS.

[QUOTE=Warrior-Mentor;108677]Glad you are getting something out of it.
I keep finding quotes that would have been good to put in there...
"There is one quality that one must possess to win,
and that is definiteness of purpose,
the knowledge of what one wants,
and a burning desire to possess it."
- Napoleon Hill
Been involved in faith ministry fro 18 years, and the stuff the QP's put on this site is awesome. People hear all kinds of messages in life and respond only to a few. My impression so far from reading QP comments is that you men respond in action-"Lip service....never heard of it"
What are your opinions on "Get Tough" by Tom Fitzgerald?

I've browsed through "Get Tough" and needless to say view it as a competent, positive, fitness guide. It is rigorous as well as informing, currently I've taken some of his running regimes to mix in with the rucking format from "Get Selected." The two-a-day schedule I can't agree more with as your body will soon be able to handle more and more stress from overload emphasis to isometric declination exercises. I believe it is a great book to have for ideas to implement into your own routine, or if you wish not to create your own, that's a good start. Hope I may have helped.

Thanks for the feedback.
I bought your book (after a long battle with the Ft Gordon Clothing sales) just before I went on leave two weeks ago. I lost count on how many times I have read it but needless to say the information contained is amazing. I have reformatted my training and will begin the new program next week. Two months out from SFAS and I'm already feeling confident in the outcome. Thank you for this Rosetta Stone. :lifter

I will order a copy of "Get Selected" as well as "Get Tough" right away and try to incorporate as much as I can into my current regime!
Thank you for the information!

Ive done the searching but have not found an answer to my question in the Get Selected book it says that sneaker boots are not authorized. While I was attending WLC at camp Williams I observed a non qual platoon training and noticed that a lot of the guys training had Nike SF boots ( a sneaker boot ) on while doing the Ruck march, so my question is has the regulation changed at SFAS? is it now aloud to wear that type of boot?
Thank you

There are no magic carpets, young Jedi. As the search should have revealed.
Wear what the Army issues you (i.e., an "issued boot"). With good socks and good insoles.
Best of luck.

Just purchased a copy. Thank you!
Team Sergeant,
I'm looking to go to Selection when CAL NG has a open spot. In the meantime I was looking to get a hold of a couple of buddies I lost track of from a 05' 06' deployment with 5th/CJSOTF @ Syverson. Any suggestions?

Contact Chapter 38 of the SFA @ Fort Campbell and ask them to help you get in touch with your buds.

I've just ordered a copy of "Get Selected! for Special Forces by Major Joseph J. Martin" and I must say that I am absolutely thrilled to read it! I hope the book makes it alive all the way to Denmark, our postal service does have a bad reputation. :)
If anyone else needs a copy I'll be glad to send them mine.

Bishop, mine came in a few days - i use Amazon.co.uk, as they are within the EU customs barrier.
If in stock, it often takes 2-3 days for a delivery from the UK, I never had any missing deliveries.
If it fails, write me a message if you are in urgent need - otherwise I can bring it to NightHawk.
Regards
Michael
Sir, wonderful book. Thank you!
Received my book and will begin reading tonight. :munchin
Got the book from BooneGA, and have read it at least 3 times thus far.. The tips in there are indispensable. Some of the stories about the history of Special Forces are really enjoyable to read.
Read the book tonight for the first time and took some notes, going to read it several more times. I also can not access warrior-mentor.com for some information referenced in the book, I attempted to send Warrior Mentor a PM but his inbox is full. Did the site move?

I read this book prior to heading off to SFAS. It proved to be helpful in my preparation for the course, it’s not the only book I read or the only research I did before attending. I was selected in September of this year and will be attending the “Q” after I get back from my current deployment. One of my guys is wanting to attend SFAS when we return stateside, I recommended this book as a must read. Another great read that I can’t speak highly enough about is CHOSEN SOLDIER, the making of a Special Forces soldier by Dick Couch. It gave me an insight of what to expect while in SFAS and after. I’ve been told that’s the easy part, after that the hard part starts (SFQC) and I can’t wait to get started!
FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION!
