PRESS RELEASE: Special Forces officer dies in Afghanistan

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, June 5, 2005) — An Army Special Forces officer based here was killed June 3, 2005 in the vicinity of Orgun-e, Afghanistan.
Capt. Charles D. Robinson, 29, a Special Forces officer, assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), at Fort Bragg, N.C., died when an enemy improvised explosive device exploded near his Ground Mobility Vehicle during operations in Afghanistan’s southeastern region.
Robinson deployed to Afghanistan in January 2005 in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
A resident of Haddon Heights, N.J., Robinson was commissioned in the Army immediately following graduation from Cedarville College in Ohio May 1998, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in foreign trade.
His first military assignment was with the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.
Robinson graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course and was assigned to 7th SFG in December 2003.
Robinson's awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Parachutist Badge, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Special Forces Tab and Ranger Tab. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal.
Robinson is survived by his wife, Laura; and parents, Charles and Janet Robinson of Brown Mills, N.J.

I met Charlie early in 2001 when we both reported for the Infantry Captain's Career Course (ICCC) in Fort Benning, GA. We were both due to enter the SF Pipeline around the same time so it was natural that we both hit it off right away. Charlie struck me as a professional and dedicated infantry officer. Yet, the one thing I liked about Charlie the most was his sense of humor and his aggressiveness.
He had been raised in South America. If memory serves, at least one of his parents worked in one of the US Embassies there for some time. His Spanish was better than most native Latinos I know. Charlie and I also attended the Combined Arms and Services Staff School during the same course, which was pretty neat since we got along great. I felt that we thought about the same way. To be honest I looked up to Charlie because his professionalism was so constant and unwavering. He was one of those rare people that meant what they said and said what they meant.
During the SF Pipeline, Charlie and I paralleled the whole time. More significantly, we got thrown together in the same small group during the MOS phase. Upon graduation, Charlie and I were very excited to join 7th Group. He had wanted to join the unit for a long time. At first, he was intent on going to 3rd Bn, where I was going. However, he met the 1st Bn leadership shortly after the beret donning ceremony and was obviously impressed by them. He went off to 1st Bn instead. Occasionally, I would bump into him and he'd tell me about how bad he wanted to be a team leader as he was, at the time, in the battalion staff. He finally got his wish and deployed to combat with his boys – the dream of every SF detachment commander.
When I first heard that a guy named Robinson died, I hoped to heaven that it was not Charlie. When I found out, it hit me hard. He will be the second friend from the unit I will bury in less than six months. I will miss him.

Thanks for the post.
The phrase "best and brightest" has been used lately, in CPT Robinson's case I believe it is absolutely correct.

Thanks for sharing. Your post puts him in my mind for as long as I live. His duty is done now and he will always be young, honorable, and full of life, like the kids in the Civil War daguerreotypes.
Along with the many other friends we have lost, he will not be forgotten.

I had the distinct pleasure of knowing Charlie in the formative years of his youth.
Basenshukai, your memory serves you well. I grew up with Charlie in Paraguay, SA, his parents being embassy personnel, mine being missionaries. We both attended the Asuncion Christian Academy. Even as a youth, he was a tremendous leader. Charlie was in my brother's class, and I was the little straphanging brother. He was someone that was quietly influential, and he greatly impacted my perception of what a man was. Unfortunately, I never took the chance to tell him so.
When I saw the photo of Charlie posted above, it took me a minute to remember his face. But the half-serious, lopsided grin was a dead giveaway that this was the Charlie I knew and respected.
Most of all, Charlie Robinson was a man commited to his God. And more than anything, he desperately wanted to do his level best for his Creator. This is what brought him to your community.

Brothers,
I recently got an e-mail from a close friend ("Danny Muj") of the late CPT Charlie Robinson who was allowed (by Charlie's younger brother) to share some photos of Charlie with us from the time of his deployment with the Group until the laying of his remains in Arlington National. I found the pictures hard to look at because I always remember Charlie as he was - full of life, larger than life.
I'll post just a few on here.
BTW, his friend asked me if I knew who the flag presenter was at the funeral. I can't tell from the picture. Can anyone lend some info on that? Thanks again and "De Oppresso Liber
PS: These photos, and others, have been up in Charlie's brother's Facebook networking site - as a tribute to Charlie - for some time now.

I agree it does look like BG Repass, but I may be able to find out for you. I seem to recall when Chris was intered 22 Aug 2005 that the Casualty Assistance Officer there had kept some records of brothers involved in the ceremony. Later today, I will contact Arlington and see if I can find out. Will post or PM as soon as I find out if there is a record.
I always spend time with the CPT whenever I go to Arlington, and I am grateful to know more about him now.
