If you could own any weapon from history, what would it be?

For me:
1. The pistol used to assassinate Jorge Eliécer Gaitán
2. The rifle used to put Checito down
3. The rifle used to put Camilo Torres Restrepo down
4. The gun Castro gave to Allende which he then used to kill himself
5. The gun that gets UBL

I believe Che was put down with a M1 Carbine.

It wouldn't surprise me if Torres Restrepo was as well.

Gaitán was shot twice with a 7.65 caliber pistol

Mary Queen of Scots didn't rate a sword. The English didn't want it becoming a "revered" icon. They used an ordinary axe that promptly went back to chopping wood. Not sure about Charles though. :munchin

I think the McMillan Tac .50 that made the shot, is still in the Recce Wpn Vault. I'd like that.

The pistol, that Hitler used to kill himself.

Some might take offense to this one, I intend none. The rifle that took out JFK. It is historically significant.

An MP5, that was used at Princes Gate.

And since someone has already got dibs, on the weapon that takes Usama out. Then I want one of the brass casings. Or a piece of the Laser Guided Munition that does the deed.

Something from Entebbe would be nice too, or one of the pins from a flashbang used when GSG9, did the plane at Mogadishu.

4. The gun Castro gave to Allende which he then used to kill himself

This one. Or rather the one he was carrying when he died, since I don't think for a minute that he killed himself. The weapon is said to have been an AK with a plate on the stock bearing the inscription To my good friend Salvador Allende, from Fidel Castro.

I've been in the courtyard of La Moneda, but didn't get to see the spot where he supposedly died.

I'm partly basing my belief on what should be the number 1 rule of a golpe - Be sure to kill - not exile, not jail - the sitting ruler. It's to easy for the former leader to build support and come back.

Venezuela violated this rule not too long ago, and we saw what happened. Fujimori left before rule no. 1 could be completed, and now he's making noises about coming back.

The corrollary is for sitting rulers to have no mercy with would be putschists. Somoza was famous for eliminating potential rivals. (Of course, he ultimately fell victim to Sandinistas that made sure to follow rule no. 1.)

Carlos Andres Perez in Venezuela failed to head this rule, and made Chavez famous by giving him a microphone and putting him on live TV after Chavez's coup failed. Chavez was supposed to only ask the remaining coup plotters to give up, but he made an impassioned speech vowing to fight another day and his political career was launched. CAP couldn't have known what an orator Chavez would prove to be. ) But I digress.

It's hard to know what happened with Allende since so many of the people with Allende that day were killed or disappeared. I think that Pinochet has said his intention with the bombardment of the palace was to prompt Allende to committ suicide, which seems too convenient. If he killed himself, it only means he beat Pinochet to it.

Simo Häyhä's Mosin Nagant M28 rifle and his Suomi K31 SMG.

542 confirmed kills in a period of 100 days. Widely regarded by historians as the greatest sniper ever, although that is up for arguement. His record is pretty impressive considering he didnt use a scope on his rifle, instead opting for the iron sights.

"Mr. Häyhä stated that he used the Mosin Nagant M28 rifle as his "sniping" rifle. This was indeed a standard issue rifle with iron sights, which is somewhat amazing as many of his targets were engaged at 400 yards or more. He had been given a Swedish Mauser equipped with a scope but he preferred the M28 to the scoped rifle . (Note: It has been reported that the Swede Mauser was given to Mr. Häyhä in February of 1940. I did not have time to confirm this but will try and find out if this is true in May 2001 when I return to Finland.) Simo Häyhä told us there were many reasons he liked the M28 over the scoped Mauser. One was that the M28 was more suited to his size of 160cm. He also stated that the scoped rifle forced him to raise his head a bit more than he liked, and this added profile might have given a Red Army sharpshooter too good of a target. He also made the point that he had always used iron sights and was used to them. Lastly iron sights were not prone to breakage or fogging which was a real worry in the snow and ice of Finland during the Winter War. "

There wasn't really a crowd, just the council who were carrying out the execution, and of the course the executioner who must have been nervous as hell.

I have also read the same story re the wig.

just to derail this a bit further, there is rather gruesome, but interesting, account of execution by drawing and quartering in "Discipline and Punish: The Birth of Prison," by Michel Foucault. The executioners weren't properly prepared (unsharpened axes, poor coordination with the horses, etc.) and this made the execution much more excruciating and difficult than necessary.

I'd like to have one of the M1893 Spanish Mausers that were being fired from the top of San Juan Hill at Teddy Rosevelt and his Rough Riders while they were at the bottom of it.

Their experience with the new rifles were enough that the U.S. government adopted the M1903 Springfield and discontinued usining the .30-40 Krag-Jorgensen.

There are a few in museums and in private collections but worth a whole lot of money.

Reading rubbernecks and mojave mans posts. One mentions the M93 Mauser and then Patton's 45s. Reminded me of a picture of Patton in Sicily. The good general described the M-1 Garand as "The Greatest Battle Implement Ever Devised". But he would ride in his jeep with both the M-1 and a K98k Mauser.

As mojave man says, the M-93 Mauser prompted the U.S. to adopt the 1903 Springfield. It also caused Springfield and the U.S. Government to have to pay to Mauserwerke about $200,00.00 for patent rights for building the 03 on a Mauser type action.

Funny you mention that, I just found out who owns it is an old Jr. High friend who collects CW artifacts. Price tag a couple years ago was $5k give or take. As old collectors get out, with no interest from family members, they simply sell items off for what they can get. Appraised price is $20k, give or take a few thousand.

Sentimental value- The sabre my Great-great grandfather , Sgt Garrett Clay Selby(Yankee Cavalry), was carrying when he was KIA at Gettysburg.

Cinematic- One of Clint Eastwood's hoglegs from Josey Wales...

Historical- Wyatt Earp's Buntline Special.

Damn all the good ones are taken, since people have already took Hitler's suicide weapon and the daggers that killed Cesar. I guess I might have to go with......... The rock David used to kill Goliath. and any weapon my Great Uncle used in Vietnam for sentimental purposes.

LOL - The largest A Team in 7th Group history was the one at the Pacora Bridge during Just Cause. A/1/7 had one heavy Team there and I have met all 2,000 of them. :)

HaHa!

There would have been 2001 there had I not been in a DAMN cast from a class II sprain from practicing fast roping all day long prior to the main event. Didn't slow me down after the first few days though. :p

I would like to own John Wilkes Booth's Gun.
