So, are the performance standards for jumping a C-130 different now? I seem to recall "up 6 out 36", most of those folks are just falling out the door. No door position and ..... weak ..... weak exits.

That jump depicts a change to the exit procedure a couple of changes ago. In 1994, the procedure was changed from "up and out" to going out the door at a 45 degree angle (to mirror the same procedure as that used on the C-141). As you stated, the exits are weak and tended to lead to twisting. In 2000, the procedure was changed again; the jumper is to "square off" his exit - turn 90 degrees and walk out the door. That does tend to lessen the twists involved. Not the same as up and out, but it works.

No door position for the #1 jumper? Heck, thats the best part other than being stick-pusher. :D
There are quite a few examples of what "not" to do while exiting a high-performance aircraft.
I don't care what anyone say's I'll alway's hate jumping. But I do need one, it's been awhile.

The best part about jumping high-performance A/C in Special Forces? - We didn't need no stinkin door position. It's been so long since I jumped anything but tailgate, I would probably screw the pooch royally if I tried to go out a door again - especially with combat equipment. And that's true of most of the guys I know. We were/are shamelessly spoiled rotten. And not even embarrassed to admit it. :D Peregrino

I'm not familiar with what kinds of Mods have been done on the Hercs, but it looks like there is a "Deflector" just forward of the door to divert the slipstream !! Maybe Angels will comment ??

I never had a tailgate other than a pair of CH-47 ramp blasts on a Saturday Fun Jump my unit sponsored. Got a few from a UH-1 in Rhode Island for the RI NG SF Parachute Competition. Everything else was C-130s and C-141s.
We had a C-130 hollywood ramp blast scheduled once over Camp Mackall, but the first pass went in the trees, and we got scrubbed for high winds.

What are those ropes in their hands they're handing to that guy standing there?
My last good exit was my first jump in jump school. It was down hill from there. No matter what, that chut opened every time. Sometimes I had a few more twists than others.
Even with ramps jumps we were usualy walking door bundles and kinda' fell out the door. Hollywood tailgates out of 47s, Carabou and Buffalos were great. Only thing better was a Hollywood tailgate water jump into Key West.
PARA-SCUBA? It all depended on the day. Some were good, some were very bad.

Maybe Angels will comment ??Yes, there is an air deflector. It helps the jumpers exit. It helps the Jumpmaster, too, when doing the outside air safety checks.

RR beat me to it. I have never personally worked on the hercs, I was a C-2 mech...ramps....I also have only jumped out of the "little bitty" planes myself. No static line for me, bubba!!! I like the freefall!! :lifter

Oh Yeah! I did a C-130 tailgate at Shark DZ with some friends from the 7th, 03.93. Without a doubt, this is my favorite jump memory.

One of the best videos depicting jumps. Thanks for sharing TW.

Those weren't there "Back When" !!! If you didn't have a "VERY STRONG" exit from a Herc, you were guaranteed at least a "Double-Bump" of your skid-lid on the side of the A/C !!! It would roll the crap out of you into the side of the A/C if you blew the exit !!!

Seems like I remember something about exiting a 130 like a 141 because of that wind deflector thing. I think they are doing it right in the video.

Great video. Since it has been out awhile, it turns out that I have three different versions of it saved. A Quicktime mpeg, and a version with that 60s song "Wipe Out". "Jump" is better. If anyone wants any of the other versions, let me know.
Edit: Oh, yeah, The Military Channel has a two part (in order) show about HALO school tonight. On now.
