When we started, I believe that most of the QPs on the Board were from 7th Group. We have grown quite a bit, and I wonder if that is still the case. Thus, this poll.

You forgot to add the 17th and 12th SFGAs to the list or at least use a deactivated Group status to cover all deactivated group people.

In my case, the only two groups that I served in was the two I mentioned. :munchin

I think I can clear up something for you VOLAR era troops. In previous days, personnel rotated, not groups. Overseas tours had the following duration.

1st Gp - Oki 3 years
5th Gp - RVN 12 months.
8th GP -Canal Zone 2 years
10TH Gp -Germany 3 years.
46th Co - Thailand 2 years.

These are for accompanied married personnel. They were sometimes shorter for unaccompanied and single personnel.

Tours at Bragg were for 1 - 3 years. There were professional homsteaders but these were the normal tours.

As a result, the longer you served in SF the more groups you may have served in.

I would have asked "What Group do you claim as home."

Don't ask. I would have to say I have fond memories of all but the 7th and the Ft. Bragg version of the 5th. :boohoo

Let me be more specific. I loved Germany, Panama and Thailand. I even liked Vietnam better than Bragg. :D

If I picked where I got the best and mos meaningful training it would be the 10th in Bad Toelz. :lifter

Let me quailfy even further. If in the beginning the 7th had gone to Germany and the 10th stayed at Bragg -- with everything being equal my opinions would probably be juxta positioned. IMO it is the location and mission not the number or color of the flash. :munchin

While it is not that long ago some of the younder guys might not know. There are a bunch of guys who served in the 5th Group and then the 3rd Group but really only served in the same battalion.

5th Group had all three battalions at Ft Bragg. When the Group HQ and the first two battalions moved to Ft Campbell the 3rd battalion stayed behind. The Army stood down the battalion at Bragg, stood up it's replacement at Ft Campbell and then renamed the Bragg battalion as 1st Battalion, 3rd Group. So those guys served in both groups but really in the same battalion.

The orders and paperwork shuffle were a little more confused but the above is the condensed version.

I actually noticed we STILL have things marked with 3/5th SFG.

Of course I am SURE it all came from BEFORE the change over...we keep it next to all the stuff that is labled 7th SFG...that is until we can scratch the markings off.
