Hunter Thompson commits suicide

"Fear and Loathing" author dead at 67

By Troy Hooper
Special to The Denver Post

Woody Creek - Hunter S. Thompson died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home in Woody Creek on Sunday night. He was 67.

Regarded as one of the most legendary writers of the 20th century, Thompson is best known for the 1972 classic "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." He is also credited with pioneering gonzo journalism - a style of writing that breaks tradition rules of news reporting and is purposefully slanted.

Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis, who is a close personal friend of Thompson, confirmed the death. His son, Juan, found him Sunday evening.

"On Feb. 20, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson took his life with a gunshot to the head at his fortified compound in Woody Creek, Colorado. The family will shortly provide more information about memorial service and media contacts. Hunter prized his privacy and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family," Juan Thompson said in a statement released to the Aspen Daily News.

"Details and interviews may be forthcoming when the family has had the time to recover from the trauma of the tragedy," Braudis said in an interview from Owl Farm, the rural Woody Creek home he moved into in the 1960s.

Thompson grew up in Kentucky. He is married to Anita Thompson, who grew up in Fort Collins. His son Juan lives and works in Denver. His grandson is William Thompson.

Thompson's books include "Hell's Angels," "The Proud Highway" and his most recent effort, "Hey Rube: Blood Sport, the Bush Doctrine, and The Downward Spiral of Dumbness."

I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me. -- Hunter S. Thompson

Didn't Bill Murray do a movie on this guy? It was called "Where the Buffalo Roam" or something like that?

Yep.

His last article was about a o-dark hundred call to Bill Murray to discuss a shotgun golf game where teams tried to shoot one another's golf balls out of the air.

Just another coward who could not face the demons he created for himself and I have no sympathy for him at all.

He put himself in to the world he lived in and while some people thought he was a literary genius I never cared for his drug induced ramblings. Especially when some of them advocate the doping of young women and then raping them.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

I see you are familiar with the location of the word sympathy. :D

Never said that I advocated his politics, or his lifestyle. Just liked the way he wrote.

Just my .02.

As an aside. I mentioned his passing to Nancy, her response "I've never heard of him".

You did indicate that you read it...

My exwife bought me a subscription once cause I told her that I liked to read the articles. It turned out that when the novelty wore off, I didn't find a great deal of substantive matter to read.

My wife started out at her dad's barber shop before she opened her own salon. When I first met her I thought it was odd that the shop had Playboy laying around the magazine rack. I asked her about it (I wasn't complainin', just tryin' to understand :) ) and she said it was a tradition in barber shops. I guess when I was a kid my barbers kept them in a special stash. It used to amuse me to see her cut some dude's hair while he was reading PB, but it didn't bother her. Of course every once in a while she would have to run down some pimply teen who tried to sneak it back into the bathroom.

Nowadays Maxim, Stuff, etc. seem a lot raunchier than PB in some respects.

HST...RIP I thought he was very off the wall, interesting writer. Besides any friend of the 1st AND 2nd Amendment is a friend of mine.

Playboy still like it, I have found that current and previous girlfriends will actually pick it up and look at it. She will even make comments about the models, outfits and stuff. She even picked out a bikini with the Playboy logo and i bought for her.
